    A cloudy day is forecast, with rain and local storms in most parts of the mainland.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 18 to 28 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 16 to 25 degrees.

    [02] Elections in spirng 2004 reiterates PM

    At a press conference today in Thessaloniki, Prime Minister Costas Simitis reiterated that general elections will take place at the end of the government's four-year term in spring next year, because the results of its policies will be clear when its program is completed at that time. The Prime Minister also gave Turkish leader Tayyip Erdogan good grades for wanting to improve ties and resolve the Cyprus issue, but said the time had come for deeds and not words.

    [03] Opposition parties react strongly to the PM's statements

    After the press conference, opposition parties reacted strongly to the Prime Minister's statements. New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis accused Simitis of using a strategy of polarisation and conflict, and said he avoided telling the truth. The Communist party said the people could expect a "storm" after 2004, irrespective of whether Pasok or ND were in power, while the Coalition of the Left charged that Simitis insisted on white-washing problems.

    [04] Petrol station owners to decide on possible strike

    Petrol station owners are scheduled to hold a crucial general meeting tomorrow, to decide on possible strike action. They are protesting against the installation of cash registers at gasoline stations.

    [05] Funeral of Evangelos Yannopoulos tomorrow

    The funeral of veteran politician and former Pasok minister Evangelos Yannopoulos ' who died last Thursday, at the age of 85 ' will be held tomorrow at 12 noon, at the Athens First Cemetery. He will be buried at the state's expense and with all the honours due to an active minister.

    [06] Greece leads its group at European Basketball Championships

    The Greek national basketball team today officially sealed the top position in its group, at the European Championships in Sweden. Greece beat Ukraine with 79 to 73, winning the third of three games.

    [07] Isreali leaders reiterate call for Arafat expulsion

    Israeli officials called today for Yasser Arafat's expulsion, after his Prime Minister, Mahmoud Abbas, resigned in anger at what he saw as obstruction of his peace drive by the Palestinian president and Israel. Meanwhile, Arafat told his Fatah faction that he wanted parliamentary speaker, Ahmed Korei as his next prime minister.

    [08] Purported al Qaeda tape pledges new anti-US attacks

    A purported audio tape by Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda group today vowed attack on Americans "everywhere," and so devastating that Washington would forget the horror of the September 11 suicide hijackings. The tape came a few days before the second anniversary of the September 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

    [09] US sees 15,000 more foreign troops in Iraq

    The United States expects no more than 15,000 foreign troops to be added to an Iraqi occupation force, as a result of a new UN resolution, American Secretary of State Colin Powell said today. He added that President George W. Bush would argue for spending more money on the occupation and for expanding the international force by winning new UN backing of the mission.
