    The weather will be partly cloudy throughout Greece on Monday, with increased clouds in the western and northern parts of the mainland and a possibility of local storms mostly on the mountainous areas of Epirus and Macedonia. Winds will be northerly, light to moderate, temporarily turning strong in the Ionian. Sunny in Athens, with temperatures ranging from 24-38 C. Sunny in Thessaloniki with possibility of local clouds in the afternoon hours, and temperatures ranging from 22-35 C.

    [02] Last wave of summer vacationers returns to urban centers

    The last wave of summer vacationers is returning to urban centers with normal traffic flow reported on both national highways. Traffic police have added one additional lane on the Athens-Corinth national highway at Kakia Skala and from the Elefsina tolls until Dafni. In the meantime, effective tomorrow once again will be odd-even license plate vehicular traffic in the city center.

    Temperatures around the country scorched today with the mercury level reaching 40 degrees centigrade in central and southern Greece and Attica. Temperatures are expected to reach normal levels from tomorrow with a significant drop after Wednesday

    [04] Busy political week ahead

    Much political interest is focused on the coming week particularly in view of the International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki opening next week. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Simitis will meet with the governmental committee in order to discuss the economic proposals for strengthening the weaker financial classes.

    On Wednesday, September 3rd, the Prime Minister will speak at the Panhellenic stadium at an event marking the 29th anniversary since the founding of the PASOK party.

    On Thursday, the Ministrial Council will finalize the government's six month action plan to be followed by the PM's departure for Thessaloniki for the opening of the 68th International Trade Fair. During his opening speech, Mr. Simitis will outline the basic axons of the government's economic policies for the coming year.

    [05] ND leader heads north for visit

    The leader of the New Democracy party, Konstantinos Karamanlis begins a two-day visit to Thessaloniki tomorrow while during the week the main opposition leader will address a gathering of his party's members in Athens. On Saturday evening, Mr. Karamanlis will speak at an open-air gathering in Halkida.

    [06] Illegal immigrants detained in Evia and Andros

    Coast guard officers detained 31 illegal immigrants in two separate incidents today on islands near Athens. According to the Merchant Marine Ministry, a group of 20 men, including nine Pakistanis and seven Afghans, were found on Evia about 80 kilometers northeast of Athens. Another 11 illegal immigrants - all from the disputed region of Kashmir - were detained on the Aegean Sea island of Andros, about 90 kilometers east of Athens. Authorities stated both groups would be deported

    [07] Iraq violence and unrest continues

    Dozens of U.S. soldiers, backed by armoured vehicles and helicopter gunships, searched farms on the outskirts of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul today in their hunt for followers of Saddam Hussein. U.S. forces killed six Iraqis who attacked their convoy with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire, a U.S. military spokesman said on Sunday.

    Two U.S. soldiers were wounded in the incident on Saturday afternoon just west of the northern city of Kirkuk. Finally, a sea of mourners today filled northern Baghdad to bid farewell to a top Shi'ite cleric, slain in a bomb attack his brother blamed partly on U.S. forces for failing to bring security to Iraq

    [08] Taliban offer resistance, two U.S. soldiers killed

    Taliban fighters put up stiff resistance todaz as Afghan and U.S. forces backed by artillery, jet fighters and attack helicopters continued to hunt hundreds of militants. The U.S. military has confirmed 33 Taliban deaths during the first three days of fighting, which has involved the largest concentration of fighters from the hardline regime since the movement was driven from power late in 2001. In a separate clash, two U.S. soldiers were killed near their base at Shkin, in the eastern province of Paktika a few km from the Pakistani border. A third soldier who was wounded was in a stable condition and awaiting evacuation.

    [09] Road crash in India kills 19 fromof same family

    Nineteen people from the same family were killed today when their overcrowded jeep collided with a bus in northern India. Another four people suffered critical injuries in the accident, which occurred 35 km west of Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan state.
