On Saturday evening, Mr. Karamanlis will speak at an open-air gathering in Halkida.(31/8/2003 8:26:00 μμ) [06] Illegal immigrants detained in Evia and AndrosCoast guard officers detained 31 illegal immigrants in two separate incidents today on islands near Athens. According to the Merchant Marine Ministry, a group of 20 men, including nine Pakistanis and seven Afghans, were found on Evia about 80 kilometers northeast of Athens. Another 11 illegal immigrants - all from the disputed region of Kashmir - were detained on the Aegean Sea island of Andros, about 90 kilometers east of Athens. U.S. forces killed six Iraqis who attacked their convoy with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire, a U.S. military spokesman said on Sunday.Two U.S. soldiers were wounded in the incident on Saturday afternoon just west of the northern city of Kirkuk. Finally, a sea of mourners today filled northern Baghdad to bid farewell to a top Shi'ite cleric, slain in a bomb attack his brother blamed partly on U.S. forces for failing to bring security to Iraq (31/8/2003 8:29:00 μμ) [08] Taliban offer resistance, two U.S. soldiers killedTaliban fighters put up stiff resistance todaz as Afghan and U.S. forces backed by artillery, jet fighters and attack helicopters continued to hunt hundreds of militants. The U.S. military has confirmed 33 Taliban deaths during the first three days of fighting, which has involved the largest concentration of fighters from the hardline regime since the movement was driven from power late in 2001. In a separate clash, two U.S. soldiers were killed near their base at Shkin, in the eastern province of Paktika a few km from the Pakistani border.
