    A partly cloudy day is forecast, increasing later in the afternoon, with local storms in the central and northern parts of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 25 to 35 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 23 to 33 degrees

    [02] Holidaymakers return to Athens

    Hundreds of holidaymakers are gradually returning to Athens today, as summer vacations for most people have come to an end. Traffic is heavy on both national highways leading into the capital, and police have made extra inbound lanes available to facilitate the smooth flow of vehicles.

    [03] Civil Protection measures taken after weather warning

    Following the weather bureau's warning about storms during the day, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection announced that it has requested measures of increased readiness from the regional authorities, in order to deal with any problems that may emerge. At the same time, guidelines have been issued to motorists to avoid any flooded roads and to remain in their cars with the alarm lights on, in the event that they become caught in a storm.

    [04] Greek athletes shine in world championship events

    Greek athletes contine to perform well in the World Track and Field Championships, currently being held in Paris. Katerina Thanou qualified in the 100-metre women's sprint finals, while Olga Vasdeki and Pigi Devetzi qualified for the triples finals. In the men's 100-metre sprint semi-finals, Giorgos Theodoridis qualified, surpassing his own record. Earlier this morning, at the World Gymnastics Championships at Anaheim, California, Dimosthenis Tabakos won the gold medal in the rings event.

    [05] PM to call for accelerated preparations for 2004 Olympics

    At the first meeting of the bi-ministerial committee for the 2004 Olympic Games after the summer holidays, Prime Minister Costas Simitis is expected to call for the speeding up of preparations for the Athens Olympics and, in particular, better coordination among those involved in organising the games.

    [06] Russian media magnate held in Greek custody

    Former Russian media baron Vladimir Gusinsky, arrested at Athens airport last week on an international warrant, remains in custody and will appear before a public prosecutor tomorrow, Greek police said today. Gusinsky was one of a small group of Russian businessmen, who made vast fortunes overnight in the privatisations of the 1990s, but he lost his business in 2000, after falling foul of the Kremlin.

    [07] Halt ordered to militant attacks on Israelis

    Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's security chief in the Gaza Strip today ordered action to halt rocket and mortar attacks on Israelis, according to security sources. Meanwhile, the collapse of a truce, following a surge in Israeli-Palestinian violence has weakened reformist Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas and cast a shadow over the US-backed peace plan

    [08] Foreign fighters a growing problem in Iraq

    The US civilian administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer said today guerrilla fighters infiltrating into Iraq are a growing problem for the occupying American-led forces. His comments came as a bomb blast killed three bodyguards in the office of one of Iraq's main Shi'ite Muslim groups, while ethnic violence flared between Kurds and Turkmen in the north
