    [02] Turkish customs agreement provokes displeasure

    A framework agreement for a customs union ' recently signed between Turkey and the self-declared Turkish-Cypriot state ' has provoked the displeasure of the international community and the Greek side. A European Commission spokesman said the agreement will be examined, in relation to similar agreements Ankara has signed with European Union.

    [03] Greek position on Parthenon Marbles reiterated

    The Greek position on the issue of the Parthenon Marbles has been reiterated by Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos, after a letter written by the Director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor was published in yesterday's edition of the "The Sunday Times." Venizelos stressed that the Greek government had never said it recognized the legal title of the British Museum to the Parthenon Marbles, and did not wish to raise the legal issue of the ownership of the sculptures, because it wanted a friendly and consensual solution to be found

    [04] Greek borders open for FYROM political refugees

    Greece's borders were opened yesterday to former Greek political refugees, who have been living in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia since the end of the 1946-49 civil war. Banned from entering the country for 20 years, it allows the Slavic-language speakers, born in northern Greece, to visit for a maximum of 20 days until the end of October

    [05] Lightning kills 2 in northern Greece

    As the rest of Europe swelters in an unprecedented heatwave, Greece was hit by storms yesterday, which caused two deaths. Two people were killed by lightning in northern Greece, during the violent storms ' a Czech tourist, 29-year-old Marcella Novotna, and a motorcyclist, 31-year-old Efthymios Giotakis. Both died instantly. The storms also caused flooding in Halkidiki

    Five members of the same family were killed by forest fires that ravaged Spain today, as forecasters predicted there would be some relief from Europe's sizzling heatwave by the end of the week.

    Liberia's President Charles Taylor resigned today and flew into exile under overwhelming international pressure to end the strife that has racked his land and West Africa for nearly 14 years. Celebrations surged in the capital, Monrovia, where at least 2,000 people were killed in the latest bout of attacks by rebels

    [08] Pakistan says US forces kill 2 of its soldiers

    Pakistan said US forces shot dead two of its soldiers and wounded another today, in an incident near the Afghan border. A senior Pakistani officials said the American forces mistook the patrol for al Qaeda or Taliban fighters. The incident was the first of its kind involving US troops operating in Afghanistan.
