    Scattered clouds are forecast in all parts of the country, with rain and storms likely on the mainland. Winds variable, light. Temperatures in Athens will range between 23-32C; and in Thessaloniki from 21C to 29C.

    [02] Protoppas responds to Pasok MP's

    Government spokesperson, Chrsitos Protopappas sent a clear message today to the 23 Pasok MP's who expressed their opposition to the opening of stock market codes. Mr. Protopappas underlined that reforms will be made particularly with respect to issues of transparency in public life, clarifying however, that views would be heard.

    [03] State bugdet deficit 6.7 billion euro in first half of 2003

    The state budget's deficit reached 6.7 billion euro during the first half of 2003 as a result of overspending in state spending. In addition, there was a lack of funds in public investments due to the reduced influx of communal funds.

    [04] US Ambassador offers special anti-radiological suits to Greece

    US Ambassador to Athens, Thomas Miller delivered special anti-radiological and chemical suits on behalf of the American government to the Greek government during a special event today at the former east air terminal at Hellenikon in the northern suburbs of Athens.

    [05] Macedonia-Thrace truck owners suspend strike

    Fuel truck owners in Macedonia-Thrace suspended their mobilizations this afternoon immediately following their meeting with the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace, Haris Kastanidis.

    In a few hours, it is expected that all fuel stations in Thessaloniki and Macedonia will be refueled.

    [06] Massive August vacation exodus begins

    Enormous crowds of August vacationers are departing by every means available today, the largest exodus of the summer months. There is particularly congested traffic on both major highways, while traffic police has implemented special measures to facilitate the summer vacationers, adding an extra traffic lane on both national highways. Among the new piloted measures to be taken is air surveillance of the street network which will be carried out by three police helicopters and one rented out from Olympic Airways. Approximately 15,000 people are expected to depart from Attica's ports today. Extra itineraries have been added to train and bus services. Air traffic at the Eleftherios Venizelos airport has also increased by 8%.

    [07] Liberian fighting continues

    Mortar bombs and heavy gunfire killed at least 11 people, including a pregnant woman, in Liberia's capital today as Nigerian peacekeepers said they would deploy in the war-battered country on Monday.

    [08] Deadly blast kills more than 20 near Chechnya

    A vehicle packed with explosives blew up outside a hospital in a Russian region bordering Chechnya today, killing at least 20 people and destroying the building. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov to fly to the scene of the attack at Russia's army base of Mozdok, in the region of North Ossetia bordering Chechnya.

    [09] Palestinians rally for prisoner release

    Thousands of protesters rallied in the West Bank city of Nablus today to demand the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, and Israeli soldiers fired rubber bullets at demonstrators near the disputed security barrier separating Israel from the West Bank.
