    Sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country. Winds north-northwesterly, light to moderate. In the west, temperatures will range from 19C to 36C; on the rest of the mainland from 17C to 35C; and in the Aegean islands from 22C to 32C. Temperatures in Athens will range between 24C and 35C; and in Thessaloniki from 23C to 33C.

    [02] Bank of Greece Governor meets with the Prime Minister

    Following his meeting today with Prime Minister Simitis, the governor of the Bank of Greece, Nikos Garganas expressed his concerns over the course of the country's inflation, which remains steady at 1,5 points above the average Eurozone inflation rate.

    Mr. Garganas underlined that the high inflation rate is maily due to the price adjustments for fruits and vegetables and the large increase in average labor costs.

    The bank governor also estimated that inflation will eventually deescalate in August and will close at an annual percentage rate of 3,5%.

    [03] Changes in the electoral law

    The government's proposed dialogue for changes in the electoral law is at the front line of the country's political developments. On Thursday, immediately following a meeting of the Pasok governmental Committee, Prime Minister Simitis will announce his proposals concerning the new electoral system and will call on the opposition parties to enter into a dialogue.

    [04] Price inspections against profiteering

    Stricter price inspections and market checks--on all products of major consumption for the elimination of the phenomenon of profiteering&#8212;widespread mainly in tourist areas--was decided upon during a meeting today between the Prime Minister and the related ministers.

    [05] Turkish invasion anniversary

    Today marks the 29th anniversary since the Greek military junta's coup against Archbishop Makarios in Cyprus--an action that paved the way for the double Turkish invasion on the island. On the occasion of this tragic anniversary, all Cypriot political parties condemned the coup in various announcements.

    [06] Breakthrough Operation in Greece

    A major breakthrough today was made in the history of Greece's medical world, following the successful completion of a mechanical heart implant operation to a patient who was in the final stage of cardiac failure. The operation was performed by distinguished heart surgeon Panayiotis Spyrou in Thessaloniki. The expenses for the costly procedure were covered by the state insurance fund, IKA.

    [07] Italian president visits Greece

    Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi began a three-day visit to Athens today. Mr. Ciampi met with the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos at the Presidential mansion, while tomorrow, he will meet with Prime Minister Simitis and the President of the Hellenic Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis, who will award the him with the Greek Parliament's gold medal.
