    Unsettled weather is forecast in many parts of the country, with cloud, showers and storms on the mainland, especially in the afternoon. Winds northerly, light to moderate, turning strong in parts of the Aegean. The temperature in Athens will range from 23 to 30C and in Thessaloniki from 23 to 31C.

    [02] Enlarged EU to meet in Thesssaloniki

    Preparations for the first EU Summit Meeting of the 25 state members are culminating with the Greek EU Presidency ending its term and Italy taking over. The agenda of talks of the meeting include the draft plan of the European constitution, transatlantic Relations, migration policy and the western Balkans course to Europe.

    Before leaving for Thessaloniki at noon to receive all European leaders, Prime Minister Costas Simitis will chair a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    Meanwhile, in an interview with NET 105.8, the President of the European Commission Romano Prodi praised the Greek EU Presidency and added that the cooperation between the European Commission and the Greek EU Presidency was close. Additionally, the EU expansion took place during the last six months after a hard and long course, adding that he expects the support of the Balkan policy will take place at the Thessaloniki Summit Meeting.

    At the same time, the enlarged Summit Meeting of the European Popular Party will take place in Chalkidiki tomorrow, as well as the international meeting of Communist and Labour parties organized by the Greek Communist party and the Panteion University.

    It should be noted that thousands of demonstrators, who are against globalization, have begun gathering in Thessaloniki, while events, exhibitions, concerts and demonstrations will take place in the center of the Thessaloniki.

    [03] European want a different policy from that of the USA

    According to the Community's opinion poll Eurobarometre, European Union citizens wish a different policy from that of the USA. The European Commission publicized the data.

    Specifically, 77% of the 15 member state citizens and 89% of Greeks believe that the European Union policy should be different and independent from that of the USA.

    [04] Earthquake shakes Evia

    An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale took place a little before 08:30 today 70 kilometres north of Athens, with its epicenter being located at Psahna, Evia.

    Old buildings collapsed and others suffered damages, while the inhabitants of the village appear worried. From their side, seismologists appear reassuring.

    [05] ND party's proposal for ASE investigation rejected

    The Parliament rejected New Democracy party's proposal for the founding of an examining committee that would investigate the Athens Stock Exchange issue. From his side, the New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis insists that a crime has been committed at the Athens Stock Exchange, adding that the issue is not over.

    At the same time, Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis said that the Athens Stock Exchange issue should not become the epicenter of political party rivalry.

    Meanwhile, the Capital Market Committee discovered that Messrs Stephanos Manikas and Michalis Neonakis had committed no offence.

    Mr Christodoulakis from his side has submitted a letter of the President of the Capital Market Committee Stavros Thomadakis with the conclusions on Messrs Manikas and Neonakis' transactions for the period 1998-2000 amounting to 1.4 and 64 million euros respectively. According to the investigation, no systematic indication of offensive behaviour or participation in embezzlement of the market has been discovered.

    Finally, the New Democracy party Parliamentary representative spoke of a complete match of those carrying out the investigation and of those being checked, since the Capital Market Committee is appointed by the Ministry of Finance.
