[02] Greece sends economic aid to quake-stricken Turkey

One day after yesterday's quake at Bingol, Turkey, there are fears that the number of the dead will reach 150 in the town itself and the surrounding villages mainly inhabited by Kurds. At the same time, efforts are being made to rescue inmates of a school dormitory. Up to now15 have lost their lives and 80 of the 198 inmates have been rescued.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan expressed his condolences to the Turkish government, announcing that the UN had set up a coordinating aid-group.

From its side, the Greek government also expressed its grief for the victims and will offer 300,000euros as aid to the quake stricken people, while a C-130 military aircraft is ready to transfer 25 men of the special forces EMAK to Turkey to offer their help.

[03] Government reshuffle not ruled out

Reacting to the accusations launched by 'Avriani' newspaper owner George Kouris against government officials, Prime Minister Costas Simitis said that he would not succumb to pressure and that those responsible would pay.

From his side, New Democracy party spokesman Theodoris Roussopoulos stated that now that the end is near, the Prime Minister does not wish the scandals to be examined by the Parliament, but also said that he would attempt to modernize the political system in summer.

In reply, the Press Minister said that the New Democracy spokesman's delirium and his insult against the Prime Minister proves that Mr Simitis' intervention has been effective and well timely.

From its side, the Democratic Socialist Movement commented that the Prime Minister avoided in giving answers to the serious political and moral issues that are poisoning Greek political life.

Finally, in an interview with NET 105.8, Press Deputy Minister Tilemachos Chitiris stated that after the Greek EU Presidency, a series of measures would be taken, not excluding the possibility of a government reshuffle.
