    [02] N17 trial continues

The long-awaited trial of 19 suspected members of the elusive 'November 17' terrorist group opened Monday at the women's section of the Korydallos prison, near Piraeus, under stringent security measures.

Today, the accused will be read additional charges, while witnesses will begin testifying as of next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Xiros brothers' lawyer George Agiostratitis has stated that he will put in a plea in bar for trial to the court, maintaining that this constitutes a political crime.

Yesterday, the court decided to finally remove the bulletproof screens set up around the dock, after complaints by some of the suspected radicals, while the issue of the televised coverage of the trial is still pending.

However, journalists are allowed to use tape recorders, while according to information the issue of the use of mobile phones will be resolved today.

Finally, State Department representative Richard Boucher stressed the particular interest of the United States for the trial, as Americans were some of N17 terrorist organisation's victims.

[03] Iraq destroys six more Al Samoud missiles

The American British proposal for the use of violence against Iraq will most probably be put to the vote at the United Nations headquarters next week, while the UN head inspector Hans Blix is expected to present earlier the results of the checks of the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

Meanwhile, Iraq destroyed six more Al Samoud missiles, while it is ready to submit a new report to the UN on the quantities of chemical gases and anthrax it has destroyed. At the same time, six civilians were killed and 15 wounded in Vasora, following a fresh bombing by American British warplanes.

On a relative development, the White House announced that the Turkish Parliament's decision not allow American soldiers to use Turkish soil for its military intervention in Iraq is not affecting American plans.

At the same time, the French President Jacques Chirac, reiterated from Algeria, that France would object to a second resolution of the Security Council that would be authorizing the use of violence against Iraq.

Meanwhile, following the end of the Arab League meeting in Qatar, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou called on the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to present all data on hidden weapons.

Finally, in a defiant message to the Iraqi people, President Saddam Hussein said on Tuesday Iraq will conquer tyrants in a speech to mark the Islamic New Year.

"You the Iraqi people will be victorious, armed with faith, and the despots will be defeated and arrogance will not benefit them," Saddam said in a prepared message, read by a presenter on Iraqi television.
