    A cloudy day is forecast with rain and snowfall on high ground. Winds easterly in the west, moderate to strong and in the east notherly very strong to gale force gradually abating. Temperatures in Athens will range between 3C to 9C and in Thessaliniki between &#8211;1C to 5 C.

    [02] Key developments on U.S led attack on Iraq

    Top UN arms inspectors will today present their second report on Iraq s nuclear weapons.The language used by chief inspector Hans Blix and his colleague in charge of nuclear arms Mohamad El Baradei will be key in determining if wavering council members call for more inspections or back US-British plans for possible war.

    To attend the Security Council are 10 Foreign ministers from UN Security Council member states among them, Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou as head of the EU Foreign Ministers Council.

    Head of the International Atomic Energy Agancy Mohamad El Baradei said that only Iraq s 100% cooperation could prevent the US from launching a military attack. He maintained that if Iraq continues giving information on biological and chemical weapons and missiles inspections could go on for a few more months.

    Greek Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis had telephone conversations with French President and British Prime-minister in view of the EU emergency summit in Brussels on Monday. UN, Secretary General, Kofi Annan will attend the summit at the invitation of Prime-minister Simitis , current EU President.

    In a letter to the 14 EU leaders, British Prime-minister, Tony Blair calls them not to block a Security Council decision allowing the use of violence in case Iraq does not comply with UN resolutions.

    In the meantime, NATO s failure to approve steps to protect Turkey in the event of a US led war with Iraq has hurt the alliance s credibility.

    Global protests against a U.S led attack on Iraq will be launched in over 100 countries, among them Greece at the weekend. Organisers predict millions will turn out around the world in one of the biggest anti-war protests ever

    [03] Cyprus issue

    Cyprus President, Glafkos Kleridis will today have a fesh meeting with Turkish-Cypriot leader Raulf Denktash within the context of direct talks on the Cyprus issue

    This is the last meeting before Sunday s presidential elections in Cyprus.

    In the meantime, UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan is expected to visit Nicosia at the end of February following his visits to Ancara on February 24 and Athens on February 25 with a view to bringing the search for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus political problem to a decisive conclusion by February 28.

    [04] Alpha Bank increase in interest rates on loans

    Following the Alpha Bank announcement for an up to 2% increase in interest rates on mortgage and consumer loans , the government has called commercial banks to take measures to protect consumers describing the increase as unjustifiable.

    In the meantime the Pireus Bank announced that it will reach a final decision on the issue within the next weeks after taking into consideration the decisions of the European Central Bank

    [05] Air-force crafts to collect patients from remote islands

    Following the 3rd crash of an Augusta Bell ambulance helicopter, Health Minister, Kostas Stefanis said that air force aircraft take up the task to collect emergency case patients from remote islands until a committee to supervise all means of air transport is set up.

    In the meantime the search continues for the 4 member crew of the helicopter which crashed few miles before landing at the Icaria airport.
