Temperatures in Athens will range between 5C to 15C and in Thessaloniki between –1C to 12 C.(16/1/2003 11:14:00 рм) [02] Cyprus issueThe Cyprus issue will be focus of talks during the meetings of Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou in Athens today with the American coordinator for the Cyprus issue and the UN Secretary General special envoy Alvaro de Soto. Papandreou will also attend the meeting between Prime-minister Simitis and the General Secretary of the NATO alliance Lord Robertson.In the meantime, Cyprus President Glafkos Kleridis and Turkish-Cypriot leader, Raulf Denktash will again meet tomorrow within the context of a new round of face to face talks. The two leaders yesterday reconfirmed their commitment to start negotiations on the grounds of the revised UN peace plan with the aim to reach a solution before the firm deadline, February 28 and hold a referendum on March 30. Denktash yesterday expressed doubts that a settlement could be reached by next month s deadline insisting that the minority of Turkish-Cypriots agree with the UN plan. However, a huge protest rally in the occupied sector of Cyprus with around 70,000 Turkish-Cypriots demanding that he negotiate the plan or quit, seems to indicate otherwise. In an unprecedented move, both UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the US State Department have urged Dektash to heed protestors, calling for a quick solution to the Cyprus issue. American ambassador to Athens Tomas Miller said that noone could ignore the huge mobilisations in the occupied sector of Cyprus and expressed his objections to Denktash demand for the creation of two states in Cyprus. From Stransbourg, in France, both Greek Prime-minister Simitis holder of the EU rotating presidency and the President of the EU parliament Pat Cox hailed the resumption of Cyprus talks and called on Denktash to follow suit. (16/1/2003 11:15:00 рм) [03] Greek EU obdusmanThe European Parliament yesterday elected Athens University professor, Nikiforos Diamantouros as the new EU obdusman to deal with European Union citizens complaints against EU institutions.In an interview with Greek state radio NET, he said that his election was a further indication of Greece s substantial and effective presence in European institutions. Both Prime-minister Simitis and European Parliament President congrtaulated Diamantouros for his election to the post. (16/1/2003 11:16:00 рм) [04] Investigation into extortion chargesProminent industrialist, Thodoros Angelopoulos testified before an Athens prosecutor yesterday within the framework of an investigation into charges of extortion, relating to protection from the November 17th terrorist group. The industrialist and his wife, the President of the 2004 Athens organising committee, Yianna Angelopoulou had given a handwritten diary to the police implicating right-wing publisher, Grigoris Mihalopoulos in the extortion racket.Government spokesman commented that if press speculation on the issue is true, the theory that the left wing is the craddle of terrorism would be proved wrong.
