    Partly cloudy skies, with a chance of rain in the west and north, are forecast for Monday. Westerly winds, weak to moderate, turning gusty in the southern Aegean into the evening. The temperature in Athens will range from 3 to 13 C and in Thessaloniki from 1C to 9C.

    [02] 2003 budget passed

    The 2003 budget passed at Parliament at midnight yesterday with 156 votes for and 139 against. The Prime Minister defended the government's economic policy, accusing the New Democracy party of political misery.

    Mr Simitis underlined the upward course of the economy and stressed that the passing of the budget gave the government the go ahead to continue its efforts for more prosperity and social and economic convergence.

    From his side, the New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis launched an attack on the government policy, describing the budget fictitious and referring to the immense fiscal dead end.

    Referring to the budget, the Secretary General of the Greek Communist party Aleka Papariga described the budget anti-popular and antisocial, while the Synaspismos party leader Nikos Konstantopoulos referred to the additional money tax-payers will have to pay.

    [03] Opinion polls give lead to Simitis and the New Democracy party

    The latest two polls conducted by the Kapa research firm and published by as many Athens dailies over the weekend mostly patterned results of previous opinion polls, although the latest surveys were conducted in the aftermath of last week's EU Copenhagen Summit.

    According to results published in the Sunday edition of &#8220;To Vima&#8221; newspaper, main opposition New Democracy was preferred by 39.1 percent of respondents, as opposed to 33.5 percent for ruling PASOK. Conversely, Prime Minister Costas Simitis was given a 38.9 percent figure in the question of &#8220;most capable prime minister» to 36.8 percent for ND leader Costas Karamanlis.

    Meanwhile, an opinion poll found in the Sunday edition of &#8220;Eleftherotypia&#8221; echoed the previous survey in terms of Simitis' edge over Karamanlis, with 44.4 percent of respondents in this poll giving the nod to the premier and 36 percent opting for Karamanlis.

    The Metron Analysis conducted the Eleftherotypia poll in the period between 18 and 20 December.

    In the same poll, respondents consider as top priority for the government, economy, the combating of unemployment, health, education, the farmers' problems the solution of the Cyprus problem and the preparation of the Olympic Games.

    Finally, government spokesman Christos Protopapas stated the Prime Minister's popularity has increased after the Copenhagen Summit Meeting, while New Democracy MP Giorgos Souflias stated that the gap in favour of his party could not be reversed.

    [04] Bodies of eight illegal immigrants found

    The bodies of eight people, believed to be would-be migrants, were located off the large island of Evia, adjacent to the central Greek mainland, on Sunday morning, the coast guard announced.

    Authorities are conducting a search of the surrounding sea region where the bodies were discovered, reports stated.

    At the same time, two Turkish slave traders were sentenced to ten years imprisonment, while the police is searching for their three Greek accomplices.
