[02] Political parties evaluate local government elections results

Round off local government elections ended on Sunday with the ruling Pasok party winning the Athens-Pireus prefecture and the main opposition N.D party maintaining its hold on the two largest municipalities of the country, Athens and Pireus.

No impressive changes took place in the power balance between the two major parties in numbers of municipalities and prefectures.

However, political party staff are called on to study the results of the elections and the political messages sent by the Greek people vote, so as to reorient their policies and strategies. Victories and defeats will certainly play a role in the country s political developments.

Commenting on the election results, government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas stressed that the N.D party failed in its effort to create a climate of political instability and conditions for early elections and the general secretary of the ruling Pasok party, Kostas Laliotis described the results as positive.

On its part, the N.D party spokesman, Thodoros Roussopoulos interpreted the election results as a message denouncing the government s policies , adding that the N.D party was the dominant political power in Greece.

Deputy of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Maria Damanaki described as very good the election results in municipalities where the Pasok and the Coalition parties cooperated while Greek Communist party deputy, Thanasis Pafilis said that voters were enclaved in the bipartisan game.
