Expressing satisfaction with the success of government employment policies, Simitis said these were effective and had driven unemployment levels to single-digit figures (9.6 per cent in the second quarter of the year) for the first time since 1997, down from 10.2 per cent in 2001. (4/10/2002 11:18:00 ðì) [05] Denktash warns with permanent partition of CyprusWithin the framework of the face-to-face talks taking place in New York on the Cyprus issue, Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash threatened to stop negotiations and to proceed to the permanent partition of Cyprus if it is acceded to the European Union.Mr Denktash was disturbed by United Nations Secretary General Koffi Anan’s statements according to which efforts for the resolution of the Cyprus issue should continue even after Cyprus’ accession.
