[02] Battle against terrorism continues

A 37-year-old teacher named Konstantinos Telios, who was born in the Aegean island of Samos in 1965 and is a permanent resident of Thessaloniki, is the “17 November” terrorist group member under the code-name “Markos”. The announcement was made by Thessaloniki Police General Director Major-General Nikiforos Tzatzakis on Tuesday.

Mr. Tzatzakis stated that Telios appeared voluntarily to the police yesterday afternoon and admitted that he took part in specific acts within the framework of his participation in “17 November”.

Meanwhile, alleged leader of the “November 17’ terrorist group Alekos Giotopoulos and members Vasilis Georgatos and Theodoros Psaradelis have been remanded in custody.

According to his lawyer, Giotopoulos rejected all charges against him, adding that they were based on the preliminary inquiries of others being accused and some evidence deriving from records with pseudonyms and inaccuracies.

Regarding Vassilis Georgatos, his advocates spoke of a typical political crime and stated that their client confessed that he had participated as a mere accomplice in certain acts of “November 17” until 1992, which he described as repulsive.

Judges of appeal Leonidas Zervobeakos, Haris Birbos and Panos Petropoulos were assigned to carry out the main inquiry for “November 17” terrorist organisation.

On a relative development Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Public Order Minister Michalis Chrysohoides met and discussed the latest developments on the battle against terrorism. According to information, Mr Chrysohoides briefed the Prime Minister on the progress taking place on this crucial issue.

Moreover, after a meeting at the Police Headquarters in Attica yesterday, Mr Chrysohoides stated that democracy has dealt terrorism a blow, which had already been beaten on a political and ideological level.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Fotis Nasiakos stated that 9 out of the 10 arrested members of the terrorist organisation confessed their participation in “November 17”, adding that these people had carried out the biggest part of the criminal acts of this organisation.

At the same time, the head Public Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance has asked for a preliminary inquiry on the leakage to the Media of the pleas of the accused.

Government spokesman Christos Protopapas from his side, condemned the leakage, while the Synaspismos party spoke of a multiple damaging act.

Finally, American ambassador to Athens Thomas Miller stated that he had no evidence that there is a connection between “November 17” and PAK or PASOK cadres. He asked that attention be given only to his and other American officials’ statements that are in the active list. Also, he described the Greek Public Order Minister as “very capable”.

    [05] Restoration of Democracy celebrated

On the 28 anniversary of the restoration of democracy, the President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos will host a reception at the Presidential Mansion to award honorary distinctions.

At an address, Prime Minister Costas Simitis described terrorism as a blemish and disgrace” after the overthrow of the junta. “It was an attempt to undermine our 30-year long effort to restore Democracy in our country”, he said.

From his side, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis stated that all Greeks should remain united and support each other due to the crucial circumstances.

The Communist party of Greece stated that the quality of our democracy is judged under the pretext of the combating of terrorism, while the Synaspismos party stated that the democratic public opinion would not tolerate the transformation of the issue of terrorism to the deterioration of the achieved framework of democratic rights and liberties.
