    Sunny and very hot day throughout Greeceis forecast for today with local cloud in the north. Winds northerly light to moderate in the southern Aegean. In Athens temperatures will range between 26C to 39C and in Thessaloniki between 24C to 38C.

    Meteorologists have forecast a heat wave starting today and continuing in the next 2 days &#8211; during which temperatures will reach more than 40 C-particularly in central Greece. Tomorrow temperatures are forecast to go as high as 42 C. Hospitals and the State Power Corporation- DEH-are on the alert to deal with any problems that might arise. A little relief is expected from Thursday or Friday. People are advised to avoid exposure in the sun and drink plenty of fluids.

    [02] Massive search to locate Koufontinas-believed to be link of 2nd generation members with November 17 masterminds

    Police investigations and a massive search are continuing to locate 45 year old Dimitris Koufontinas &#8211;who is believed to be the key person who could lead to a complete dismantling of the November 17 organisation. The anti-terror squad believe Koufontinas to be the link of November 17 second generation members with the masterminds.

    According to police reports, he was born in northern Greece- the son of a 5-member family , who reported him missing over 20 years ago. It is believed that around that time he was recruited as a member of the elusive urban guerilla organisation.

    Meanwhile ,injured bomber Savvas Xiros &#8211; who underwent an eye operation &#8211;is recovering well and is expected to continue his testimony to a public prosecutor about his alleged participation in November 17. According to reports Xiros has revealed the names of 6 more members of the November 17.

    Commenting yesterday on a public debate on terrorism, the President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Nikos Konstantopoulos denounced alleged attempts to involve in terrorist actions the left wing and those who fought against dictatorship while Left wing candidate for the post of Athens Mayor, Spiros Halvatzis blamed the government for making systematic efforts to upgrade the role action and intervention of foreign secret services in the dismantling of the November 17 organisation.

    The new Attikon state hospital in the Athens west suburb of Haidari opens to the public today. In the meantime IKA doctors will only treat emergency cases today due to a new 24 hour strike .

    [04] Greek National Gymnastics team won two medals in World Championship

    The Greek National Gymnastics team won e medals a gold and a bronze in the 25th Gymnastics World Championship held in New Orleans, in the U.S.

    The gold medal was won with 24.450 points in the program with the three ropes and the balls and the bronze in the program with the 5 ribbons.

    [05] New round of Cyprus talks opens today

    A new round of direct talks between Cyprus President Glafkos Klerides and Raulf Dektash opens in Cyprus today. In the meantime, the U.N special envoy on Cyprus , Alvaro de Sotto &#8211;who arrived in Nicosia yesterday- will have separate meetings today with Mr. Klerides and Dektash.

    In parallel, the U.N Security Council has clearly indicated that the Turkish Cypriot side does not follow a constructive stand in the direct dialogue and refuses to allow Mr. De Sotto to present ideas for the solution of the basic aspects of the Cyprus issue .

    Meanwhile, Greek-Cypriot, Vasos Elias , will stand trial at a pseudo state court in Ammohostos today . Vasos Elias along with another Greek-Cypriot tried to pass into the occupied parts of Cyprus last Friday.

    Embattled Turkish premier, Bulent Ecevit, faced with the prospect of early polls amid a political crisis said today he may step down from office before his three party coalition government loses it ruling majority.

    [07] Neo- Nazi fires at French President Chirac at Bastille parade

    A deranged neo-Nazi fired a rifle shot in an attempt to assassinate President Jacques Chirac during France s Bastille parade yesterday but the man was quickly subdued and the march continued uninterrupted. According to police reports the man was taken to a mental hospital.
