Labor Minister, Dimities Repose has proposed amendments in many articles of the draftbill whose debate begins on Tuesday.The President of the General Confederation of Greek Labor backs the draftbill , the President of the Civil Servants Union objects to the new regulations while the board of the Union of Greek banks has described the draftbill as inefficient. (14/6/2002 1:19:00 μμ) [05] E.U Home Affairs Council adopted action plan to tackle illegal immigrationThe European Union Justice and Home Affairs Council which convened in Brussels approved a proposal by current E.U President Spain to reinforce the E.U s external borders and called on third countries to cooperate with the block in the fight against illegal migration or risk unspecified repercussions. Spanish Interior Minister said countries of transit and origin for illegal migrants should clamp down on human traffickers and document fraud , reinforce their border controls and launch campaigns against illegal migration.(14/6/2002 1:21:00 μμ) [06] Pasok party Central Committee conference opensThe conference of the Passaic party Central Committee opens today with a speech by Prime-minister and President of the party , Costs Semites.Following a long cabinet meeting Mr. Semites said that high growth rates, competitiveness, social justice and solidarity were the government s main targets in its effort to achieve real economic and social convergence with the European Union, stressing that economic figures confirmed the success of the government s policy. According to data presented by Finance Minister, Nikkiso Hristodoulakis Greece recorded the second highest growth rate in the EU in 2001, pushing Greek per capita income to more than 70 percent of the EU average while in 2001 the average salary in Greece rose to 80 percent of the EU average with a parallel significant drop in inflation and a turn of budget deficits into surpluses. Mr. Semites also underlined that unemployment was reduced to 10.5% and expressed hope that it would fall to 9% soon. Commenting the N.D party spokesman said that Mr. Semites repeated what he wishes to achieve and not what he can . In a counter replay, Government spokesman , Hoists Protoppapas said that the N.D party does not want to admit that the country is changing at a most rapid pace. (14/6/2002 1:20:00 μμ) [07] Prohibition of smoking and use of mobiles in schoolsSmoking and use of mobile phones within the school premises will be soon prohibited according to new regulations to be soon implemented by the Ministry of Education.(14/6/2002 1:22:00 μμ) [08] Heavy blow on drug traffickingThe operation code named Winner conducted by the Greek police in cooperation with the U.S, Spain and France dealt a heavy blow to an international ring of cocaine drug traffickers by spotting a freighter with no flag which was carrying more than a tone of cocaine. Exchange of fire was necessary before the police seized control of the vessel and arrested the 12 strong crew.
