The doctors of the Social Security Fund (IKA) insist on their stands despite the fact that the government has met their demands. Today, doctors will meet with the board of IKA and competent ministers. Social Security Alternate Minister Rovertos Spyropoulos stated that the government plans to include doctors in the First Grade Health Body that is being set up. Meanwhile the staff of the hospital "Elpis" held a four-hour working stoppage this morning.

    [04] Bill on Mass Media

A draft bill on Mass Media the government presented yesterday foresees that any individual holding more than 5% of stocks in any form of media should be considered as a "major stockholder", so as to ensure transparency and legality in the sector. Another clause forbids public contracts with media companies as well as with individuals related to them, including close relatives. The government spokesman stated that the government s proposal will be the basis of a dialogue with competent bodies so that the relative bill may be tabled in parliament in about one month. He also accused the former Mitsotakis government of the New Democracy (ND) party of having created a world of anarchy and unaccountability in the media. In response, the ND said the government is interested in consolidating institutionally the issue of interwoven interests. Commenting on the issue, the Greek communist party saidthat "through its stand the government admits its ties with specific interests". Meanwhile, the president of ESIEA (the journalists Union) Aristidis Manolakos said the union will criticize the law after it studies it. In a related development, the Code of Journalistic Ethics released by Press Minister Christos Protopapas yesterday forbids the release of private moments or talks of citizens by the Media without their permission and also the broadcast of information obtained through illegal means.

[05] Debate on corruption in the public sector

During the Prime Minister s hour in parliament, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will reply to a question raised by ND party deputy Prokopis Pavlopoulos on the issue of corruption in the public administration.

An Australian consortium deposited a 105 million euro letter of guarantee for the purchase of 51% of the Olympic Airways (OA) share capital. However, the deposit does not guarantee the positive outcome of the deal, as there should be agreements on a series of issues related to the company s business program.
