    [02] Farmers decide on future actions

    The farmers will hold an assembly in the region of Tempi on Saturday to decide on their future actions.

    The government reiterates that it is open to dialogue with the farmers, stressing however that their actions should not be affecting the country's social life.

    [03] Government plans to combat corruption

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is expecting to hear the proposals of the competent Ministers regarding the combat of corruption in the public sector. According to information the government is looking into the possibility of creating a service for internal affairs in every Ministry similar to the service in the Greek Police (EL.AS.)

    Stricter control in electronic games will also be pursued, while government sources do not rule out a complete ban of the games.

    [04] Kliridis and Denktash hold talks

    The Cypriot President Glafkos Kliridis is having talks with the Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on the territorial issue and the question of Greek-Cypriot properties in the Turkish occupied northern parts of the island. Meanwhile, the Greek government points out that the reinforcement of the Turkish military forces in northern Cyprus is causing problems to the dialogue on the Cyprus issue.

    [05] Greek Public Order Minister visits Cyprus

    Public Order Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis will pay a visit to Cyprus today, at the head of a Greek delegation.

    [06] Joint Greek-Cypriot military exercises

    The Greek armed force' s annual exercise on map code-named "Alexandros-2002" begins today. The exercise will take place together with the Cypriot exercise "Olympos-2002", in the framework of the single defense doctrine between Greece and Cyprus.

    [07] Plans on changes to industrial defense

    A meeting will be held at the National Defense Ministry on issues of industrial defense today with the participation of the ministers of National Economy Nikos Christodoulakis, of Development Akis Tsochatzopoulos and the General Director of Armaments Spyros Travlos.

    The Defense Ministry is planning changes in the industrial defense through the union of the industries of PYRKAL and EVO, and in the management structure of the Ministry concerning armaments and industries.

    [08] Journalists' strike

    ESIEA- the Greek Journalists' Union- announced that it is satisfied on the fact that all the journalists took part in the 24 hour strike nation-wide in all the Mass Media.

    Newspapers will not circulate today

    The president of ESIEA, Aristidis Manolakos pointed out that the sector of the Media is going through a crisis and spoke of an involvement by political and economic powers. He also announced that journalists who do not operate according to the Union' s Charter will be sued.

    In response to the Newspapers Owners Union which described the journalists' strike as unjustified, ESIEA stressed that the owners do not want to admit the existence of involvement in the Media.

    [09] Teachers' strike

    Intermediary education teachers are holding a strike today, demanding mainly salary increases and the withdrawal of the draft bill on the merit criteria. The TEIs- the Technical Education Institutes - remain closed in Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Larisa and Patra.

    [10] IKA doctors also on strike

    The polyclinics of IKA (the Social Security Fund) will be working with security staff starting today until Tuesday, due to the doctors' strike.

    [11] Arson attacks

    Offices of the ruling PASOK party in the suburbs of Galatsi and Exarchia, as well as an Automated Machine of the National Bank in the suburb of Kypseli were set on fire last night.

    [12] Winter Olympics

    The Winter Olympics start in Salt Lake City at 3 a.m. Greek time today, under strong security measures. The president of the US George W. Bush will declare the opening of the games.
