    [02] Reactions for the ETE - Alpha Bank merger collapse

    The collapse of the merger between the National Bank of Greece and Alpha Bank has triggered off political and economic reactions. The day after found the two banks preparing their next move.

    Obstacles and difficulties do not negate the necessity for structural changes and privatizations, stated the national economy and finance minister Nikos Christodoulakis on Saturday.

    Meanwhile, the main opposition New Democracy (ND) party accused the government of political irresponsibility and called for the resignation of National Bank governor Theodoros Karatzas, while government spokesman Christos Protopapas accused the ND party of being irrational.

    In addition, the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress party is holding the government responsible for the collapse of the merger and foresees negative political and economic side effects.

    [03] Meeting on food inspections

    A broad meeting will take place under Development Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos today, on the issue of responsibilities concerning inspections in the food market.

    It has been already decided that a team of experts of the United Food Inspection Body is to have contacts with butchers in the market of Rentis and other open markets in order to improve the structure of their businesses.

    [04] New round of Kliridis-Denktash talks

    A new round of vis-a-vis talks between the Cypriot President Glafkos Kliridis and the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash begins in the airport of Nicosia today, in an especially formed area for the occasion.

    The two officials are scheduled to hold three meetings per week in the presence of the UN special advisor Alvaro de Soto.

    [05] IOC delegation visits Athens

    A delegation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headed by IOC vice-president Denis Oswald arrives in Athens today to appraise the course of the Olympics.

    [06] PM Simitis will visit Sofia

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will visit Sofia tomorrow for talks with the Bulgarian political leadership.

    [07] Developments on forthcoming local administration elections

    The local administration elections would be a decisive political battle for the progress and development of each municipality and prefecture, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis stated, closing a meeting of PASOK ' s Central Committee on Saturday.

    Meanwhile, PASOK deputy Theodoros Pangalos, in an article carried in the Athens newspaper TO VIMA TIS KYRIAKIS, assessed that the ruling party will loose the elections and called on the Prime Minister to convene the party s central committee to discuss the social and political alliances the party should pursue in order to reverse the bad climate.

    In response to Mr. Pangalos statements, the Government Spokesman stated that it is time for work and statements made by party members are not to be commented.

    [08] The Thessaloniki TEI closes down

    In Thessaloniki, the teaching staff of the Technical Education Institutes (TEI) is closing down the college for an indefinite period of time, protesting thus the delay in the upgrading of the Technical Education Institutes.

    The teaching staff of the Athens TEI meets today and the Piraeus TEI will meet tomorrow, to decide on the form of their actions.

    Meanwhile elementary and high school teachers are also planning to hold strikes.

    [09] Labor Minister s statements on retirement

    The Greek Labor Minister Dimitris Reppas who participated at the informal European meeting of Employment and Social Affairs Ministers in Bourgos, Spain, stressed that the increase of the retirement age limit is positive only if it is the wish of the employed themselves and not a compulsory option.

    [10] Atomic Energy Committee appeals for return of stolen radioactive device

    The Atomic Energy Committee has warned that the possession and use of the radioactive device - stolen in Larissa on Friday -is exposing the users to serious health risks and appealed for the return of the radiographic device.
