    [02] Weather forecast

    Cloud with light snowfall is forecast for most parts of Greece today. Winds northerly, northeasterly, of gale force. In the north, temperatures will range from -7C to 5C; on the rest of the mainland from -5C to 12C; and in the islands from -3C to 8C. Cloud with light snowfall in Athens with temperatures between 0C to 7C. Mostly sunny in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from -1C to 5C

    [03] Prime-minister Simitis on an official visit to the U.S.

    Prime-minister Kostas Simitis yesterday left for an official visit to the U.S. Today Mr. Simitis will meet with the U.N Secretary General, Kofi Annan while tomorrow he will meet with American President George Bush at the White House.

    The Cyprus and the euroarmy issues, the Olympic Games, bilateral relations and the formation of a modern security system after the September 11 attacks on the U.S will dominate talks during Mr. Simitis contacts in the U.S.

    In his statements, prior to his departure Mr.Simitis stressed that Greece will not give in to any pressures on the issues of terrorism and foreign policy, adding that the times have passed when certain countries instructed Greece' s Prime-ministers to follow certain policies.

    The Greek Prime-minister' s statement came in repply to the recent American television channel CBSreport on terrorism in Greece and unfounded allegations about connection of certain government deputies with the November 17 terrorist organisation.

    ND. Party President Kostas Karamanlis offered full support to the Prime-minister, stressing that this was a critical year for national issues and called on all Greeks to unite their forces and face facts with courage.He also warned that there was no more time for submissions.

    Commenting on Mr. Karamanlis statement, National Defence Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou, described the ND. leader intervention as specially positive.

    The Greek Communist party described Prime-minister Simitis statement as big words which would not be carried out in deeds.

    The President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Nikos Konstantopoulos called the Prime-minister tostick to a firm stand to promote and defend Greece' s national rights.

    [04] Greece' s political parties critical on CBS report on terrorism in Greece

    The CBS report on terrorism in Greece has given rise to strong reactions by all political parties in Greece.

    Government spokesman, Tilemahos Hitiris described the CBS report as an example of tabloid journalism while ND.party spokesman, Theodoros Roussopoulos stressed that it raised questions regarding which expidiences it served.

    ND deputy Dora Bakoyianni spoke of the channel 's strange aim in view of the Greek Prime minister' s visit to the U.S.

    The President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress Nikos Konstantipoulos noted that the government shpuld not degrade Turkish provocations and pressures by the American administration while the President of the Free citizens movement, Dimitris Avramopoulos described the report as unacceptable and groundless.

    [05] Problems due to extreme weather conditions easing off in Athens

    Life in the city of Athens is gradually returning to normal after the problems caused by the extreme weather conditions.

    However, icy roads are still dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.

    Snow chains are still required in many suburbs of northeastern Attica. Many villages in the island of Crete and Evia are still cut off. Army helicopters today will again supply cut off villages with first need items.

    The extreme weather conditions have caused serious damage to crops whose prices have gone sky high.The government has planned increase in imports of produce to deal with the problem.

    After assesing damages, the goevrment will compensate farmers.

    [06] Greek national Defence Minister to visit Cyprus

    Greek National Defence Minister Yiannos Papantoniou will pay a two-day official visit to Cyprus, at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Sokratis Hasikos, it was announced here on Tuesday. Papantoniou, will arrive in Cyprus on January 30 and during his stay he will be received by President Glafcos Clerides and by Archbishop Chrysostomos. Apart from his talks with Hasikos, he will meet the leaders of the parliamentary parties. Papantoniou will leave on January 31.

    [07] Programme for teaching Greek

    Macedonia-Thrace Minister George Paschalidis announced on Tuesday that his ministry would spend one billion drachmas over the period 2002-2006 on programmes for teaching Greek to repatriated Greeks, foreign immigrants and expatriates abroad after a visit to the Greek Language Centre.

    [08] Cocaine smuggled into Greece from Colombia

    More than 200 kilos of cocaine smuggled into the country from Colombia were confiscated at a Piraeus customs house on Tuesday. According to police, the large quantity of cocaine was hidden inside a container that arrived at Greeces largest port from Bogota, Colombia. No arrests were announced.

    [09] Yiannis Zonas kidnappers arrested

    Hristoforos Lasithiotakis and an Iranian, permanent resident of Greece, suspects in connection with the kidnapping of Yiannis Zonas were taken to the public prosecutor today. The 32-year-old businessman was kidnapped on October 2 and released 63 days later in December, after his family paid a ransom of one million dollars.

    [10] Irene Pappa, possibly candidate for the post of Athens Mayor

    Actress Irene Pappa, who was elected "Woman of Europe" this year is likely to be proposed by the Pasok party, for the post of Mayor for the city of Athens. No official proposal has benn made yet.

    [11] After Afganistan, the campaign on terrorism will possibly continue in Somalia or Yemen said American Defence undersecretary.
