    [02] Weather forecast

    Another cold day is forecast for today with snow and sleet in many parts of the country. Weather gradually improving during the day. Sporadic rain and storms in the Aegean and Crete Winds northerly very strong in the Aegean gradually abating. Scattered cloud in Athens with snow likely in the north and east of the city in the morning,temperatures between -1C and 4C, same weather in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from -7C to -1C.

    [03] Bad weather conditions - problems

    A new wave of bad weather is expected from Friday while the recent heavy snow fall and polar temperatures caused serious problems to sea, air and road transport. Snow chains are required for cars to drive in northern and central Greece.

    A 57 year old man died of cold in Paleocastro , village in northern Greece. The airports of Kozani, Kastoria, and Alexandroupolis remain closed while road transport from Alexandroupolis to the rest of the Evros prefecture has been cut off.

    In a letter to Patras municipal council, Environment and Public Works Minister, Vaso Papandreou assures that anti - flooding projects in the Diakoniaris stream - where a father and his son lost their when car was swept away by the flooding waters last Saturday - will begin on the first half of 2002.

    [04] Athens garbage collectors still on strike - court decision tomorrow

    As Athens garbage collectors continue their ongoing strike , rubbish piled up in the city streets.

    Repeated appeals by the Athens municipal authorities to refrain from putting garbage outside have been largely ignored by the city residents.

    Interior Minister Kostas Scandalidis met with representatives of the sanitation workers but agreement was not reached on their demands for pay increase.

    A court decision regarding demands of garbage collectors working under contract with the state is expected tomorrow.

    [05] Public admittance of ND party connection with Mayo company bank account.

    N.D party honorary President, Konstantinos Mitsotakis public admittance about the ND party s connection with the bank account of the Liberian Mayo Company case has given rise to an exchange of harsh criticism between the two major political parties.

    Government spokesman, Hristos Protoppapas has called on the ND party spokesman, Theodoros Roussopoulos to recall his recent statements that the ND party has never had any connection with such accounts.

    On his part , Pasok party , general Secretary, Kostas Laliotis noted this is just the beginning of confessions.

    Commenting the ND party spokesman said that the government ought to defend itself inreferrence to the present and future of Grek citizens instead of returning to the past. A meeting of ND party coordinators chaired by the party s President Kostas Karamanlis will be held today

    [06] Reduction of Unemployment and rapid development pace next year

    In his speech ,during the debate in parliament of the 2002 state budget, Economy Minister Nikos Hristodoulakis stated that reduction of unemployment rate was the primary target of the governments economic policy.He announced a package of significant reforms and predicted rapid pace of development for next year.

    The ND party accused the ruling Pasok party of lying and efforts to return to the past while the Greek Communist party and the Coalition of the Left described the 2002 state budget as antipopular.

    [07] New measures - immigrants

    Interior Minister, Kostas Skandalidis announced yesterday a series of legislative and organisational measures in reference to immigrants living in Greece

    [08] Prime-minister Simitis will visit Washington

    U.S. President George W. Bush will welcome Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis in Washington on January 10, 2002, according to an announcement by the White House press secretary's office on Tuesday.

    "This visit provides an opportunity to deepen cooperation between the United States and Greece, key NATO allies, on stability in the Balkans, Cyprus, NATO and the European Union, counterterrorism, and preparations for the upcoming Olympics in Salt Lake City and Athens.

    The visit will also serve as a reminder of the great and enduring contributions that Greek Americans have made to the United States and to American society," the announcement said.

    [09] Greece joining in the NATO peace keeping force in Afganistan with 200 servicemen

    Greece contribution to the NATO peacekeeping force in Afghanistan will number 200 servicemen, Greek Defence Minister Yiannos Papantoniou said on yesterday after the NATO Defence ministers meeting in Brussels.

    He noted that Greece will participate with a medical team, a company of engineers, two C-130 cargo aircraft and a small number of special forces troops charged with the protection of the Greek mission.

    [10] Inter-religion meeting opened in Brussels today

    Following an initiave by the Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos and the E.U an inter-religion dialogue opened in Brussels today.

    Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos, representing approximately 250 million Eastern Orthodox faithful around the world, stressed that the initiative for an international conference amongst the world s religious leaders has been universally endorsed, something he said demonstrated the international community s respect and trust to the Patriarchate.

    [11] According to NATO reliable sources Somalia will be the next target of counterterrorism campaign

    American President, George Bush said that U.S forces in Afganistan have found additional videotapes in hide-outs used by Osama bin Landen s al Qaeda network.
