Storms are forecast on Crete and the Dodecanese.Winds north-northeasterly, moderate to strong, turning to very strong in the Aegean. In Athens temperatures will range between 5C and 8C and in Thessaloniki from -5C to 5C. The National Metereological Service has forecast a new wave of bad weather with low temperatures , storms and snow as from tonight. Ferry routes from Rio-Antirio, Preveza-Actio and Kavala-Thasos are closed due to strong winds. [03] MRB opinion poll results. Major political parties satisfiedThe two major political parties appeared satisfied the latest opinion poll conducted by MRB. The results released yesterday put the ND party ahead of the ruling Pasok party in voters prefeerence but the difference is 2.3% less than a survey carried out last month. Prime-minister Simitis is still considered the best man for his post.The ND party is ahead with 34,8% of respondents saying they would vote for ND in the next elections compared to 28,2% for Pasok. The percentages for the other political parties are the following, 6,1% for the new party, Free Citizens Movement , founded by Athens mayor , Dimitris Avramopoulos, 4,7% for the Greek Communist party, 3% for the Coalition of the Left and Progress and 1,4% for DHKKI. Commenting on the results, government spokesman Hristos Protopappas and Pasok party General Secretary Kostas Laliotis said that the opinion poll confirmed the peoples confidence in Prime-minister Simitis and indicated the upward course of the Pasok party. [04] Domestic growth rate at 4,4%Data issued by the National Statistical Service for the 3rd quarter of this year indicates that despite a worldwide slowdown , the domestic growth rate was 4,4% , surpassing the 4,1% aim of the government economic staff , investments increased by 10,4% and consumption rose by 2,6%.According to National Economy Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis , the Greek economy is capable of continuing to develop next year at a faster pace than other countries and reiterated that the top priority was to boost employment. [05] Stamp duties abolishedAn amendment was tabled in the parliament yesterday which provides for a 7% tax on the repos . Stamp duties on salaries and personal statements of the 105 article as well as in other daily transactions will be abolished as from January 1st 2002 while special consumption tax on heating oil will be reduced .[06] DEH shares begin trading todayTrading of shares of the Greek Power Company-DEH -begin today at the Athens and London stock marketswith the share price for private investors at 4328drs.[07] Farmers called off road blocksFarmers requesting higher prices for their products called off their road blocks citing bad weather but vowed to return at the end of the month.Speaking to the parliament competent committee, Agriculture Minister , Giorgos Drys said that this years cotton producers income will range close to last years levels which was one of the best years for cotton producers. [08] Hospital doctors 24 hour strike on ThursdayHospital doctors have decided to stage a 24hour warning strike tomorrow Thursday, demanding an immediate settlement of their income and institutional requests.[09] Greek Foreign Ministry demands changes of American-British text on euroarmyThe Greek Foreign Ministry has requested changes in the American British text concerning the euroarmy- which Ancara has accepted or else the issue will be left open even after the Laaken summit[10] Population of Greece increased by 6.7%The population of Greece in 2001 totalled 10,939,605 compared to 10,252,580 in 1991, marking an increase of 6.7 per cent, according to initial census data made public yesterday by the National Statistics Service of Greece (ESYE).Of the 10,939,605, 5,424,089 are males and 5,515,516 are females. [11] Civil servants 15-day vacations in August 2004The government announced yesterday that it was considering offering 15-day vacations to civil servants and other public sector employees in August 2004, when the Olympic Games are hosted in Athens.Town planning, environment and public works Minister Vasso Papandreou made the statement during a press conference a day before leaving for Brussels to attend an EU environment ministers' council. Several proposals have been aired over the past few months on ways to reduce Athens traffic congestion for the 2004 Games, although August is traditionally a month when most city dwellers take their holiday while schools are closed.
