[02] Israel to retaliate in reply to recent suicide attacks
The Israeli ministerial Council is deciding today on the way Israel
will retaliate against Hamas and Jihad organizations for the recent
suicide bomb attacks that resulted in the death of many Israelis.
From his side, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has declared the
Palestinian territories in a stated of emergency. Following Washington
s demand and the United Nations proposals, Hamas and Jihand members
were arrested by the Palestinian police so that those responsible be
punished. Meanwhile, four Palestinians were killed yesterday evening in
exchange of fire with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.
[03] Gale force winds in the Aegean still blowing
Alhough the bad weather is abating in Western Greece, gale force winds
continue blowing in the Aegean. Én the meantime, tens of villages in
Central Greece remain snow-bound, while ship departures from the ports
of Pireaus and Rafina have been cancelled.
[04] Checks in the market by the ministry of Commerce
Following the increase of prices of many products due to the imminent
introduction of the Euro, officials of the ministry of Commerce are
beginning a new series of checks in the market from today.
[05] Farmers to continue their mobilizations
Farmers are continuing their mobilizations by blocking squares of
villages and towns with their tractors. Moreover, they are staging
demonstrations on December 10. From its side, the government anounced
that the European Union s decision on the prices of cotton was final
and would not change. Meanwhile, New Democracy party leader Costas
Karamanlis from Rodopi accused the Prime minister of criminal mistakes
in the sector of Agriculture. In reply, Agriculture minister Georgios
Drys said that the government would not allow Mr. Karamanlis to
undermine the efforts for securing the Greek farmers interests.
[06] Laliotis insists on PASOK s cooperation with Leftish parties in view of
the Municipal elections
Addressing PASOK cadres yesterday, the party Secretary Costas Laliotis
said that PASOK s enemies are not in the party but outside of it.
Additionally, he insisted on PASOK S cooperation with other Leftist
parties in view of the municipal elections. Meanwhile, PASOK s
Executive Buraeu is meeting today to decide on the policy it will adpot
against the New Democracy party.
[07] Klerides-Denktash meeting to be held tomorrow
The United Nations Secretary General s special adviser Alvaro De Soto
is to have separate meetings with the President of the Cyprus Republic
Glafkos Klerides and the Turkish-Cypriot representative today, while
the Klerides-Denktash meeting is to be held tomorrow.
[08] Government may slash air transport fees
The government announced on Saturday that it was studying the
possibility of slashing air transport fees at the recently opened
Athens international airport, more than two months after the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks in the United States continue to chill air travel.
Speaking from Thessaloniki, Transport Minister Christos Verelis said
another meeting would take place at the finance ministry on Monday to
finalise a proposal for a 10-percent cut in airport fees at Athens new
Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. He added that decreases are expected to
commence in early January. Verelis spoke one day after Athens-based
Axon Airlines-one of the frontrunners in an international tender to buy
a majority stake and assume the management of national carrier Olympic
Airways-announced that it was suspending operations.
