Bush at the White House on Tuesday.Rogge and Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who initiated the idea of an Olympic Truce, participated in a meeting of the International Olympic Truce Centre´s Executive Committee at the IOC´s facilities in Lausanne on Monday. The IOC President stated that the security level both in Salt Lake city and Athens is high and absolutely adequate. [04] Confrontation on AfghanistanAn off-the-agenda Parliament debate on political party leaders´ level yesterday focused directly on the war in Afghanistan.Although party leaders disagreed at firs on the issue, at the end of the discussion it was agreed that "the immediate reaction to the events of Sept. 11 as well as the international rally against terrorism is a one-way street." [05] Campaign on the circulation of euroDuring a cabinet meeting today, PM Kostas Simitis will announce that the government will launch a campaign to inform citizens regarding the smooth operation of the economy, as the drachma will be withdrawn from circulation leaving its place to the euro, in order to deal with the first difficult weeks of the change.The governor of the Bank of Greece Loukas Papadimos has also been invited to attend the cabinet session. [06] 2002 State budgetThe European commission and OECD have reassured that Greece will be the most fast developing country in Europe in 2002, as Finance minister Nikos Christodoulakis underlined yesterday at the beginning of a debate on the 2002 state budget at the parliamentary financial affairs committee.[07] Athens bourseSmall gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange on Tuesday. The general index rose by 0.53%, closing at 2,700.13 points, while the volume of transactions was at 156 million Euro or 53 billion drachmas.Of the stocks trading yesterday, 249 recorded gains and 79 had losses, while the value of 28 stocks remained unchanged. [08] Greek criminal arrested in RomaniaKostas Pasaris, one of the most notorious Greek criminals, was arrested in Bucharest yesterday.The chief of the Greek police will fly to Bucharest today to be briefed on the details of Passaris´ arrest. According to initial information, a team of Greek police officers had arrived in Romania 10 days ago as there was information according to which, Pasaris had managed to leave Greece and was in Romania sheltered by his Romanian associates.
