    [02] Crete - earthquakes

    Two earthquakes measuring 5.3 and 4.8 on the Richter scale shook southern Crete early today, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, officials said. The epicenter of the quakes was located in the sea off Crete near the island of Gavdos, Europe ' s southernmost stretch of land.

    [03] Farmers - crucial decisions

    Farmers Coordinating committees of Central Macedonia are meeting today to decide on their further actions and stand.

    First they have decided to launch a briefing campaign and send a letter to prime minister Kostas Simitis, while tractors will be placed at the national highway Athens - Thessaloniki without however blocking the traffic. A nation-wide assembly has been scheduled to take place in Karditsa on Thursday to assess the overall situation.

    Meanwhile, the price of cotton will not drop below 271 drachmas per kilo, as the agriculture minister George Drys said. The leader of the main opposition New Democracy party Kostas Karamanlis who visited Aigio yesterday, described the statements of the Agriculture Minister, while he accused the prime minister Kostas Simitis personally that he shows indifference for the farming world.

    [04] Meeting on social dialogue

    Labor minister Dimitris Reppas continues briefing contacts in view of the forthcoming dialogue on the social security system and is due to meet with the board of OTOE (The bank employees union) on the issue.

    It appears that the government will present during the social dialogue a solution to the civil servants and bank employees social security issue, according to a publication of the Sunday paper TO VIMA TIS KYRIAKIS. Government spokesman Christos Protoppapas reiterated that the government will honor the dialogue and the bodies that will participate in it, by laying down its views only at the table of talks.

    [05] Confrontation over electoral law

    The government criticized strongly the recent statements of the ND party leader Kostas Karamanlis who warned the government not to think of playing games with the electoral law.

    Press Minister Christos Protoppapas stated that Mr. Karamanlis does not know that according to the Constitution, the electoral system that will be enforced in the next elections cannot be changed, without his party s consent.

    In Response, the ND press spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said that none will manage to falsify the people s will through attempts to falsify electoral laws.

    [06] G. Papandreou proposed for Athens mayor

    Minister of Transports Christos Verelis, proposed George Papandreou as PASOK s candidate for the Municipality of Athens. Answering questions on the upcoming municipal elections, he noted that if Mr. Papandreou ran for Mayor in the Municipality of Athens, there would be a great chance of success, while it would be very useful to Athenians
