    [01] Preparations for summit meeting in Belgium

    Prime Minister Simitis chaired a meeting that took place yesterday in order to prepare the extraordinary two-day summit meeting due to open in Gand, Belgium on Friday. The agenda of the summit meeting includes issues related to the establishment of the Euro, and the institutional reforms to be followed in the next EU enlargement.

    [02] No Anthrax cases in Greece

    The Greek government advised for calm on the issue of the anthrax scare and decided to create a Crisis Management Group at the General Secretariat for Political Protection.

    Health Minister Alekos Papadopoulos appeared reassuring on the possibility of a biochemical war in Greece, stressing that there are no anthrax cases in our country and that all possible measures are being taken to prevent them. At the same time, the American ambassador in Athens Thomas Miller expressed satisfaction at the measures that are being taken in Greece after the terrorist attacks on the US, after a meeting yesterday with the Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis.

    Meanwhile, the leader of the New Democracy party Kostas Karamanlis yesterday hosted a dinner to the ambassadors of countries of the EU in Athens and referred to the fact that the entire civilized world should participate in the actions against terrorism. He also said that the EU should play a leading role in regional crises, especially in the Western Balkans.

    Mr. Karamanlis will depart for Brussels tomorrow to attend the summit of the European Popular Party due to be held on Friday.

    [03] Developments in Greece and the EU concerning terrorism

    The global crisis and its repercussions have lead the EU to take drastic measures, as three different ministers meetings took place in Luxembourg yesterday and important decisions were made.

    The agreement on the further expansion of the legislation on money laundering and ways to deal with international terrorism is particularly important. For this reason, it was also decided to boost cooperation between all the countries, while additional measures were agreed upon to reinforce air transports.

    [04] Athens bourse

    Gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange on Tuesday. The general index rose to +1.83% at 2,303.71 points, while the volume of transactions was improved compared to Monday at 86.68 million Euro or 29.54 billion drachmas.

    Of the stocks trading yesterday, 287 recorded gains and 40 had losses, while the value of 60 remained unchanged.

    [05] Meeting between the PM and the President of the Republic

    The President of the Republic Konstantinos Stefanopoulos and Prime Minister Kostas Simitis met yesterday and discussed international developments and the outcome of the ruling PASOK party congress.

    During their conversation, Prime Minister Simitis said he was satisfied at the results of the partys congress, and pointed out that it was creating the prerequisites for speedy and effective work concerning the countrys development course. After the meeting Mr. Simitis stressed that the impact in Greece after the attacks against the US and the military operations in Afghanistan are under control and advised the citizens to remain calm and self-confident.

    [06] 2004 Olympic Games - developments

    In Lausanne, France, the visiting Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge, had their first official meeting yesterday and exchanged views on the activities and the prospects of the Olympic Truce Center (OTC).

    The IOC President praised the idea for the creation of the Center and expressed optimism over the fact that the Olympic activities will not be suspended but will be intensified instead.

    For his part, Mr. Papandreou thanked Mr. Rogge for his assistance to Greece in the framework of the organization of the 2004 Olympic Games and expressed satisfaction at the fact that Greece has a leading part in this effort.

    Meanwhile, the president of the ATHENS 2004 organizing committee Yanna Angelopoulou brief |Prime Minister Kostas Simitis yesterday about the new given facts stemming from the international crisis in the sector of security in the 2004 Olympics.

    Earlier, Mrs. Angelopoulou had signed a memorandum with the Minister of Environment and Public Works on the aesthetic upgrading of Athens.

    [07] Meeting on Greek radio and television

    Speaking at the Parliamentary Institutions and Transparency Committee yesterday, the president of the National Radio and Television Council Vassilis Lambridis referred to the ways permits will be granted to television channels transmitting across Greece.

    The president of ERT, Greek state Radio and Television, Panagiotis Panagiotou also addressed the Committee and appealed to the political parties to leave ERT out from the political competition, while he underlined that the majority citizens now turn on to the news bulletins of ERT.

    [08] Finance Ministers Meeting in Luxebourg - EU growth rates

    The 15 EU Ministers of Finance Monetary Affairs met in Luxembourg yesterday and stated that they are in favor of keeping a strict fiscal discipline in the 15 EU member states, despite the confirmed slower growth rates of the European economies.

    The Greek Minister of Finance Yannos Papantoniou stated that the growth rate in Greece will be at 4.5% in 2001 against the initially planned 5% and stressed that the high fiscal debt does not leave room for slack moves.

    [09] 2nd Pan-Australian Cultural Conference

    The Council of Greek Abroad of Australia will organize in Melbourne from October 19 to 21, the 2nd Pan-Australian Cultural Conference with speaker from all the parts of Australia, to cover all the political aspects of the Greek-Australian society.

    According to the organizers of the conference, during the sessions that will take place in both Greek and English, the future prospects of the cultural presence of Greeks and next generations to come in the fifth continent will be dealt with in detail.
