    [01] More attacks to follow says Al Qaeda

    Abu Ghaith, representative of the organisation Al Qaeda has declared a holy war against the USA and their interests all over the world. In tandem, he praised those responsible for the 11 September attacks, warning for more similar attacks. The White House stressed that the message of Al Qaeda boosted his conviction that Osama Bin Laden´s organisation should be wiped out. At the same time, according to the staements of the Afgan regime made to the BBC, the Taleban regime lifted all bans against Osama Bin Laden, anouncing that he is free to carry out a holy war against the USA. The representative of the Taleban, Abdulhai Hai Mutmaen stated that following the beginning of the American attacks Jihad is the Muslims' obligation and the USA will have to deal with the repurcussions from its attacks. American Defence minister Donald Rumsfeld has anounced that the Afgan air defence has been completely destroyed, adding that from now on operations would be carried out around the clock. The capital Kabul, Jalalabad in the east and the western cities of Herat and Shindand are also reported to have come under attack overnight. Bombs and missiles rained down on Kabul in the hours of darkness. The city, plunged into darkness as the electricity supply failed, was lit only by anti-aircraft tracer fire and explosions. According to American President George W. Bush, US air supremacy has been secured, refusing however to reveal whether ground forces would be deployed in Afganistan. Mr. Bush is meeting with Nato Secretary-General today. At the same time, the Foreign ministers of the 22 country-members of the Arab League denounced terrorism and asked from the United Nations to take action. However, no mention was made to the American attacks against the Taleban regime in Afganistan. On a relative development, the White House anounced that it would not wait for the approval of the Organisation of the Arab summit meeting, which will be held in Doha, Qatar today. From his side, in an attempt t o gain the confidence of the Arab public opinion, which is sceptical about Washington´s campaign against Osama Bin Laden, British Prime Minister Tony Blair arrived in the Persian Gulf today. Meanwhile, Federal agencies had been warning for the possibility of further terrorist strikes, and cautioned Americans to be extra vigilant. The Health services in Flodira have anounced that a man is being examined in Northern Virginia so as to see whether he has been infected with Carbon bacteria. If he is tested positive, then he will be the third victim in the USA in the last ten day. The patient was collaborating with the company American Media Inc., at which the other two men were working and one of which died on Friday. 300 employees of the same company received tests and were asked to take antibiotics for precautionary reasons. At the same time, the authorities in Canada reported that a building in Montreal was evacuated for some time, after an employee received an envelope from American Media Ink company in Florida. In Kentucky, 200 employees of the tax office were put into guarrantine when an employee opened an envelope that contained a mysterious white powder.

    [02] Short term repurcussions for the Greek economy due to crisis says Papantoniou

    Following his meeting with Prime Minister Costas Simitis yesterday, National Economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou stated that the repurcussions from the International developments to Greece would be limited and last for a short period of time. Additionally, he pointed out that the Greek economy was protected by the Third Community Support Framework Funds and the works for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games.

    [03] New Democracy party supports National Policy against terrorism

    Addressing his party yesterday, New Democracy President Costas Karamanlis said that his party was supporting the National Policy against terrorism, pointing out that Greece should use all its powers to wipe out the last remains of domestic terrorism. Besides, after being briefed by National Defence minister Akis Tshochatzopoulos on the issue of terrorism, New Democracy deputy Dora Bakoyianni said that she was satisfied from the measures the Greek government was taking against terrorism.

    [04] Pan-religious Conference to be organised by Christodoulos

    Pan-religious Conference to be organised by Christodoulos Following an initiative by the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos, the Church of Greece will hold a Pan-religious Conference on the combatting terrorism in Athens.

    [05] Nikiforos-Toxotis military exercise to take place later

    The Greek-Cypriot military exercise "Nikiforos-Toxotis" scheduled to be held on 17 October was postponed for later due to the American campaign against Afganistan presently.

    [06] 53rd Frankfurt International Book Fair opens yesterday

    The opening of the 53rd Frankfurt International Book Fair yesterday afternoon, took place under extreme security measures, in the presence of the Greek President of the Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos, and the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder. Authorities have taken all necessary security measures, so that not even the slightest incident may take place during the fair, especially after the threat of terrorist attacks in Europe and the US. 87 Greek publishing houses are participating in the Book Fair, which are supported by the Ministry of Culture with 1 million drs, while approximately 850 new Greek books will be presented.

    [07] 6th PASOK Congress to begin tomorrow

    The sessions of the 6th PASOK Congress, at which participating will be about 6,000 delegates, will begin tomorrow with the Prime Minister´s speech. Mr. Simitis explained that the political views to be voted for on Saturday would not in any way consist a government policy. Presiding at the Congress will be Mrs. Vaso Papandreou following a unanimous decision of the party´s Executive Bureau.

    [08] Greek migrants to be receiving 15,000,000 drachmas housing loan from now on

    National Economy minister Yannos Papantoniou and Interior minister Vaso Papandreou sighned a decision according to which Greek migrants will be able to get 15,000,000 drachmas as a housing loan.

    [09] Olympic Airways reduces number of flights

    Olympic Airways has decided to reduce flights for the winter period. Specifically, from October 28, flights abroad will be reduced by 30 per week and domestic flights by 40.

    [10] 40 illegal immigrants arrested

    At least 40 illegal immigrants were arrested in Agioi Anargyroi , Northern Greece today and were taken to the police authorities of the area.

    [11] 0,23% rise in the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday The General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange rose slightly be 0,23% yesterday, closing at 2.220 points.

    [12] International Conference of Religious leaders to be held

    Foreign minister Yorgos Papandreou undertook the intitiative for an International Conference to be held , so that the leaders of Religious dogmas who would participate could lead to the de-escalation of tension and help in the cooperation between Religions and Civilizations. Today, Mr. Papandreou is visiting Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos in Constantinople to discuss the issue. The Conference has been arranged to take place within the following days. Besides, the Greek Foreign minister will begin a tour of the Arab world on Sunday and his first visit will take place in Syria and Iran.
