In tandem, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld continues his Middle East tour on Thursday, with talks in Oman and Egypt. On Wednesday, he was in Saudi Arabia, where he said America intended "to proceed on all fronts" in its fight against terrorism. Mr Rumsfeld was speaking after meeting Saudi leaders on his first stop of a visit to the Gulf region to shore up Arab support for possible military action. Besides, the competent committee of the American House of Representatives decided unanimously to implement milder measures against terrorism by abolishing the proposal of Mr. Bushs government to detain foreigners, who have not been charged, for an indefinite time. At the same time, President Bush has announced a revitalisation package of between $60bn and $75bn for the US economy. Mr Bush said the package was needed on top of regular expenditure to "kick start" the economy and avert a recession following the 11 September suicide attacks on New York and Washington. Meanwhile, the Taleban leader called on the Muslim businessmen to contribute financially to the holy struggle for the defence of Afganistan. However, according to today's edition of the Japanese newspaper "Mainintsi Sibun", the Pakistani President Pervez Musharaf intends to break up his countrys bonds with the Afgani government. [02] New Democracy party celebrates its founding 27 years agoA music event took place at Lycabetus yesterday evening to commemorate the founding of the New Democracy party 27 years ago. A concert was held by the famous composer Stavros Xarchakos, while the New Democracy party President Costas Karamanlis referred to the terrorist attack on the USA, pointing out that the political forces should help the people overcome the crisis that broke out in the whole world with calm.[03] Papandreou meets has meetings in New YorkMinister of Foreign Affairs Yorgos Papandreou met with the United Nations Secretary General Koffi Anan in New York yesterday and his American counterpart Colin Powel with whom he discussed about terrorism.Today, Mr. Papandreou is visiting London, where he will meet with his British counterpart Jack Straw. Following his meeting with Mr. Papandreou, Mr. Colin Powel stated that the relation between Greece and the United States is very close, expressing his thanks to Greeces support. [04] Simitis urges for harder work on Olympic venuesThe Inter-ministerial meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Costas Simitis yesterday focused on the delays of Olympic works.During the meeting, it was stressed that the remarks of the IOC regarding delays on some venues were correct. However, this did not apply for all venues. The Prime Minister asked from the members of the Inter-ministerial committee to work harder, to accelerate the pace of work and to have a good cooperation. After the meeting, Press undersecretary Tilemachos Chytiris said that the IOC was 99% satisfied when it left Greece. [05] Additional reductions on interest rates proposed by PapantoniouThe Greek Banks are ready to proceed to additional reduction of interest rates closing the gap between interest rates for deposits and loans.According to National Economy minister Yannos Papantoniou Greece should follow the general trend for the support of consumption so as the repurcussions from the slowing down of the World Economy could be milder. [06] Coastal navigation network to extend to all islandsThe Committee of Coastal Navigation companies met yesterday to discuss about the form the new Coastal navigation network will have. The new plan, which must be completed before October 30, 2002 aims at extending the network to all islands.Participating in the Committee of Coastal Navigation are representatives of the ministry of Merchant Marine and Aegean, representatives of the local administration, the Greek Merchant Chamber, the boar of shipowners and unions of sailors. [07] Greek appointed as member of the Albanian Supreme CourtThe Albanian President Rejep Meidani sighned a decree yesterday, which appoints Mr. Spyros Spyrou as one of the members of the Albanian Surpeme Court. Mr. Spyrou's candidancy was voted for by the majority of the Albanian Parliament a week ago.Mr. Spyrou, who is a renowed Professor of Penal Law at the Tirana University, is the first member of the Albanian Surpreme Court that comes from the Greek minority living in Albania. He comes from Agioi Saranda and until recently he was in the judiciary at the Dirachio court. [08] According to opinion poll company New Democracy party comes firstAccording to the opinion poll company "Metron Analysis" conducted for ANT 1 radio-television station, New Democracy party comes first with 6,7 points and Costas Simitis is first in order of preference with 3,2 points.The Greek Communist party follows with 5,4%, the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress party with 3,3% and the Social Democratic Movement with 1,7%. [09] PASOK' s 6th Congress a new start for the party says SimitisFollowing the end of the meeting of PASOK Executive Bureau yesterday evening, Prime Minister Costas Simitis described his partys six Congress as a new start.In the meantime, during his address to the Union of Correspondents of the Foreign Press, Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos said that no-one questioned Mr. Simitis. However, he reiterated that the governments policy should change. [10] 0,29% drop at the Athens Stock Exchange yesterdayThe General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange dropped by 0,29% yesterday, closing at 2.223,59 points. Entry of illegal immigrants to Greece increases The dramatic developments in Afganistan and Pakistan has multiplied the number of illegal immigrants entering Greece during the last days.Only during the last 24 hours 580 illegal immigrants entered Greece from these countries, while the representatives of 44 countries discussed about illegal immigration with Minister of Interior Vaso Papandreou yesterday. Mrs. Papandreou warned that unless measures was taken, then the latent xenophobia could be transformed to racism.
