In a separate development, journalists in Washington have strongly reacted to the State Departments decision to ask the US funded Voice of America radio station not to air a rare interview with Mohammad Omar, leader of Afganistan' s ruling Taliban saying it was against every principle of journalistic ethic. The State Department defended its decision saying that the American taxpayer, the Voice of America should not be broadcasting the views of the Taliban. The Onassis Foundation has donated the sum of 500,000 US dollars to the assistance funds for the widows and orphans of the hundreds of firemen and policemen who were killed while trying to save people trapped in the rubble of the two towers of the World Trade Centre in New York following the terrorist attacks on the US on September 11.
