    Sunny in most areas of the country on Wednesday , with light cloud in the inland regions. North to northwesterly winds, light to moderate. Light cloud weather in Athens, with temperatures ranging from 19C to 33C. Same in Thessaloniki with temperatures ranging from 18C to 31C.

    [02] Attack on the US latest developments.

    The shura, or council of Afgan Muslim clerics meet in Kabul today to decide whether to bow to international demands for the surrender of Osama bin Landen. They demand evidence for his connection with last weeks attacks in the US .

    The council could endorse handing over bin Landen or holy war against the US or any country helping it if attacked. The White House beat the drums of war again accusing the Taliban of contradictory messages to Washinghton in connection with the surrender of the most wanted man Osama bin Landen..

    A fleet of 14 war crafts headed by the air-carrier , Roosevelt sails off the Norfolk port on the US east coast for a 6-month military mission in the Mediterenean and the Persian Gulf.

    In the meantime, Washington has called on Sudan and Cuba to cooperate with the US in the combat of terrorism. We must note that both countries are included in the US list of countries supporting terrorism.

    Palestinian leader Yiaser Arafat is willing to offer all means in his disposition to assist the US in the combat of terrorism. American President George Bush yesterday signed a congressional resolution authorising military action against those behind the attacks on NY and Washington, saying he was unalterably committed to a direct, forceful and comprehensive response. In a relative development , American undersecretary for Economics ,Jimmy Giurul said that the American administration will submit a new bill to Congress to deal with money laundering within the context of the new strategy for the elimination of terrorism .

    In parallel, during his meeting at the White House with French President Jacques Chirac, the American President , launching a personnal campaign for international support in his war on terrorism, won a show of unity from French President Jacques Chirac who underlined Frances total solidarity and determination to fight terrorism on the side of the US. President Bush will meet with the British Prime-minister Tony Blair tomorrow.

    The EU Ministers Council mets tomorrow to decide on the measures the EU will take against terrorism while state leaders of the 15 EU member states will hold an extraordinary meeting on Friday to discuss the same issue .

    In the meantime , the British High Commission today ordered diplomatic dependents and non-essential staff to leave Pakistan because of the increasing danger of unrest over the US confrontation with Neighbouring Afganistan.

    Boeing Co. announced yesterday that it would lay off about 30,000 workers in its commercial jet unit by the end of 2002 in anticipation of a sharp drop in orders from a troubled airline industry rocked by last weeks attacks on NY and Washington. Also United Airlines plans about 20,000 job cuts.

    Deep concern over developments in the world markets after the attacks on the US increase.Wall Street closed with losses yesterday while Asian markets showed an upward trend today.

    [03] Security , top priority for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

    The Greek government reiterated on Tuesday, one week after the devastating terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, that security will be the top priority for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Prime-minister Costas Simitis stressed to members of a high-ranking inter-ministerial committee assigned with smoothing over bureaucracy and delays for 2004 preparations that we would everything in our power for the countrys security. He also said it was obvious that an Olympics security masterplan will be constantly improved during the run-up to the Athens Games.

    The leadership of the Athens 2004 organising committee ATHOC- also attended the meeting.

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis will meet with National economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou today in view of the Finance and Economics Ministersmeeting in Liege at the week-end .

    Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou will meet with the President of the ND party, Kostas Karamanlis today within the context of his contacts with political party leaders.

    The electric train on the Peireus-Kifissia route will not run today from 12-16 hours today due to a work stoppage announced by the employees.

    [04] Olympic Airways special flight to NY.

    Olympic Airways has arranged for an extra flight to New York on Wednesday, in addition to its regular OA 411 flight at 12:20 p.m., in an attempt to clear the backlog of passengers waiting to travel to the United States.

    The extra flight departs at 10:00 a.m., while passengers are advised to come to the airport four hours before their scheduled departure time.

    [05] Hotel collapses in Konstantinopolis- up to 50 dead.

    A small hotel collapsed in Turkeys largest city , Konstantinopolis early today burrying as many as 50 people in the rubble. So far , 10 people have been pulled out of the rubble.

    A subway line was being built beneath the hotel, private television station NTV said .

    [06] Israel army told to halt attacks after Arafat move

    Prime-minister Ariel Sharon ordered the Israeli army to halt attacks and withdraw from Palestinian ruled territory yesterday after Palestinian leader Yiaser Arafat told Palestinians to enforce cease-fire. Both leaders acted under fierce international pressure to end a year of Israeli Palestinian bloodshed widely seen as an obstacle to US efforts to forge an anti-terror alliance after last weeks attacks on NY and Washington.
