    [01] Inner cabinet meeting

    Next year' s state budget, economic policy and the transfer to the euro currency were the main subjects of talks during today' s meeting of the inner cabinet chaired by Prime-minister Kostas Simitis. The Governor of the Bank of Greece, Loukas Papadimos also attended the meeting.

    [02] Olympic Games licended merchandise to be sold in the US

    Licenced merchandise in the 2004 Olympic Games will be sold in the US following an agreement forged in New York on Monday, the Athens organisers of the event said. Sale of the products is estimated to bring revenue of over five million US dollars, the 2004 organising committee said in a statement. The pact will be signed in November by Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, president of the Athens organisers of the 2004 Games and the US national Olympics committee

    [03] Public Prosecutor' s document on the purchase and selling of shares to be released today

    The Public prosecutor' s document on the purchase and selling of shares during the preelection period by the DEKA company will be released by the Speaker of the House, Apostolos Kaklamanis, at the parliament' s plenum today after all the political parties commitment to overvote an amendment of the parliaments regulation providing for the briefing of the parliamnet' s summer recess session on public prosecutors documents.

    Scattered cloud with sunny spells are forecast in many parts of the country today, with the west and north likely to see some showers or storms. Winds southwesterly, moderate, turning strong in parts of the south. In the north, temperatures will range from 15C to 27C in the west from 18C to 29C and in the rest of the country from 17C to 31C. Scattered cloud in Athens, and possibly a shower or storm, with temperatures between 18C and 29C. Light cloud over Thessaloniki turning to a shower or storm with temperatures from 14C to 27C.

    [05] Prime-minister Kostas Simitis meeting in Athens with his French counterpart Lionel Jospin

    Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and his French counterpart Lionel Jospin covered bilateral relations and European issues during their one-hour talks in Athens on Monday. Talks also focused on the situation in strife-torn neighbouring FYROM. Jospin is on a working visit to the Greek capital at the head of a high-ranking French delegation that also includes Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine. Speaking to reporters afterwards, both men emphasised that Greek-French relations are excellent. The two prime ministers also responded to questions regarding the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), telling reporters that both sides views on the issue coincided. Among others, Simitis and Jospin said they favoured the continued presence of a NATO-led international weapons-collection force in the land-locked republic to the north of Greece in order to assist normalisation in that country. During the press conference, Simitis noted that he and Jospin agreed that the international economy is undergoing a period of recession, while at the same time there are "positive signs", mostly coming from the United States, as well as from other places. He did, however, noted his the belief that there will be improvement next year and development rates will increase. Simitis also stressed that he and Jospin agreed that there should be greater coordination on economic policy within the European Union, noting that Greece will undertake the rotating presidency of ECOFIN during the second half of 2002. On his part, Jospin stressed the very positive role Europe's new currency, the euro, will play as a tool of "stability and development in Europe".

    He noted the important role of the European Central Bank and agreed with Simitis on the need for a better and greater coordination of the economic policies among Eurozone member-states. French prime minister Lionel Jospin was received by the President of the Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos and met with the President of the Greek parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis with whom he discussed the Cyprus issue, the siutation in the Balkans, the future of Europe and globalisation.

    [06] Commitment for improvement of quality of foodstuffs

    European Commissioner on health and consumer protection David Byrne and European Commissioner on Agriculture and Fisheries Franz Fischler in a joint press conference in Athens on Monday expressed satisfaction over Greece' s commitment to improve the system of the hygiene and quality of foodstuffs. Fischler said consumers have greater demands as to the quality of foodstuffs, but at the same time they have to accept the prices which correspond to the upgraded produce and hygiene. "Low prices, overproduction and quality are not compatible," he said. Similar discussions have also taken place in six other countries and will continue in all the European Union countries.

    [07] Athens stock market opening up today

    Equity prices rebounded at the opening of trading today on the Athens Stock Exchange, with the general index up 1.57 percent at 2,576.69 points and turnover at 22.3 million euro, or 7.6 billion drachmas
