    [01] PM to inaugurate Thessaloniki Trade Fair today

    Thessaloniki's 66th International Trade Fair will be inaugurated this evening by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and will last until September 16 with the participation of 18 states, while this year there will be no honored country like China in 1999 and the United States in 2000.

    According to government spokesman Dimitris Reppas, the Prime Minister is to anounce a series of measures regarding low income earners and the development of Thessaloniki. In the meantime, Trade Unions are staging mobilizations for which Mr. Reppas stated that the government is not worried.

    [02] Papantoniou to anounce measures for the boosting of enterprises

    National Economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou will publisize a bill today regarding the boosting of enterprises. Specifically, there will be tax incentives to promote the merging of companies in or out of the Athens Stock Exchange, new tax co-efficients for the Merchant Marine and measures that will boost enterprises involved in the new economy.

    [03] 66% of Greeks below poverty level

    According to the yearly report of the General Confederation of Greek Workers and the Civil Servants' Board on economy and employment publisized yesterday, 66% of the Greek tax payers stated that their income was below poverty level.

    The report points out that the gap between the rich and the poor may widen, while employment is expected to fall slightly.

    The President of the General Confederation of Greek Workers Christos Polyzogopoulos stated from Thessaloniki that social inequalities were expanding, adding that there should be a restribution of wealth.

    [04] Evert speaks of control of the Athens Stock Exchange by politicians

    The Speaker of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis received a document from the Public Prosecutor regarding the buying and selling of stocks before the elections by the Public Enterprise of Mobile Values.

    According to Mr. Kaklamanis the document will be publisized at the plenum in Parliament in October.

    From his side, New Democracy party deputy Miltiades Evert maintains that politicians have been involved in the issue, adding that the government is in panic and the fraud will not be covered.

    In reply, government spokesman Dimitris Reppas accused Mr. Evert of reiterating his groundless allegations regarding the control of the Athens Stock Exchange. The Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress party pointed out that it denounced all actions, which use the Athens Stock Exchange for petty party expediencies, adding that the party would take a stand on the issue after it was briefed.

    Finally, government circles spoke of an attempt of creating impressions in view of the Prime Ministers speech at the Thessaloniki Trade Fair.

    [05] EU commissioner expresses dissatisfied with Denktash

    The European Union commissioner responsible for the European Union expansion expressed the European Unions disatisfaction over the rejection of the United Nations Secretary General Koffi Anan's proposal for the resumption the the Cyrpus proximity talks by the Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash.
