    [01] Simitis to have series of meetings

    The course of the PASOK party to the Congress and his speech at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair are Prime minister Costas Simitis' priorities.

    Meanwhile, Mr. Simitis is meeting with the party's Secretary Costas Scandalides on Monday to discuss about the party's Central Committee meeting due to be held on August 31.

    On Tuesday the Prime Minister is going to meet with the Presidency of the Industrialists' Association in Northen Greece and on Thurday he is to hold a cabinet meeting to discuss issues related to Education.

    [02] Mobilizations in Thessaloniki

    The Municipality of Thessaloniki and other bodies are planning to hold mobilizations during the Prime Minister Costas Simitis' presence at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair in order to complain about delays on the Thessaloniki metro and the privatization of the International Trade Fair.

    In the meantime, Macedonia-Thrace minister Yorgos Paschalides is meeting with the Mayor of Thessaloniki on Monday and on Tuesday he is to meet with the Prime minister and a delegation of the Industrialists' Association of Northern Greece.

    [03] New Democracy party to decide on its future policy

    New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis is going to meet with his partys top cadres on Monday to discuss about the strategy his party will adopt during the next months.

    [04] The Church is back with the issue of state - identiy cards

    The issue of the state identity cards will be brought forward again following the decision of Holy Synod to anounce on August 28 the number of signatures collected by believers who are against the decision for the identity cards to bear their religious affiliation.

    The Archbishop's associates are pointing out that the Church had postponed the anouncement of the result because it did not wish the issue of the identity cards to become a part of the political problem PASOK party was facing.

    [05] Hajichristos and Kazantzides in critical condition

    Actor Costas Hajichristos, who has been in the intensive care unit of the Medical Centre in Athens, is still in a critical condition, while popular singer Stelios Kazantzides health is deteriorating.

    [06] Strikes in the petrolium sector

    Reacting to the government's decision for the securitization of the company "Ellinika Petrelaia", the Panhellenic Federation of employees working in the petrolium sector, oil refineries and the Chemical Industry have declared a series of 48-hour strikes.

    The mobilizations began at the oil refineries in Aspropyrgos and in Thessaloniki on Saturday, while today all employees working at the company "Ellinika Petrelaia" and subsidiary companies will partcipate in the strike.

    Problems in the supply of fuel are expected to arise in Thessaloniki, while the demand of fuel in Athens is expected to be covered by private oil refineries.

    [07] Greek Parliament exhibition opens its doors

    The exhibition of the Greek Parliament "Thrace 2000: 80 years since its incorporation to Hellas" opened its doors in Komotini on Saturday. The exhibition, which will remain open until September 14, is hosting valuable data and artefacts of archaeological, ethnographic, historical and folklore content from antiquity until our days.

    [08] Greece to acquire satellite

    After ten years of delay Greece will have its own telecommunications satellite in cooperation with Cyprus, which has already been using a similar satellite for some years.

    An agreement is expected to be signed with the Greek-Cypriot company "Hellas-Sat Consortsium", which will undertake to launch the new $200 - worth satellite.

    The satellite will be ready to function before mid September 2002 and will give a boost in radio and tele-communications, in tele-medicine, tele-education, the internet etc. If a need arises, it will be used for the needs of the National Defence ministery.
