 Concerns over PASOK congressAlthough theoretically on holidays, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis still appears concerned about ensuring the required funds for the government's pledged welfare package and also for the upcoming congress of the ruling PASOK party in October.
According to press reports, Prime Minister Simitis is seeking final decision on these issues and is studying the strategy he will follow for the crucial party congress.
In an interview with a Sunday newspaper, National defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos had called for a change in government policy. However, he clarified that he would not challenge the Prime Ministers leadership at the upcoming party congress.
Commenting on Mr. Tsochatzopoulos' remarks, the Prime Minister's aides pointed out that it was natural for leading deputies and party officials to express their views and proposals on those matters, prior to the congress.
 New chief of police assumes his postThe position of Chief of Police was officially assumed on Monday by lieutenant general of the Greek Police, Fotis Nasiakos. The official ceremony took at noon in the ceremony room of the Public Order Ministry.
In a brief speech, Mr. Nasiakos stressed that he was receiving his position from a lieutenant general with many successes, and pledged to upgrade the force and bring it closer to citizens.
The Minister of Public Order Michalis Chrysochoidis, underlined that the highest responsibility of the Greek Police is to ensure the safety of the 2004 Olympics and called on everyone to join forces in the battle against crime.
Meanwhile, 24-four-year-old Dimitrios Polydoropoulos, suspected accomplice of escaped convict Costas Passaris, the countrys most wanted outlaw at present, appeared before an examining magistrate on Monday facing multiple felony and misdemeanour charges.
According to police, Polydoropoulos confessed to giving Passaris the key to his flat. In addition, a small cache of weapons, ammunition and cash -- believed to be the booty from various local bank robberies were found in the apartment.
Charges against Polydoropoulos include racketeering, illegal weapons possession, narcotics trafficking, harbouring a known outlaw and the illegal possession of police frequency scanners.
 Contracts on beach leasesHellenic Tourism Real Estate SA on Monday signed a preliminary contract with a consortium of domestic companies that won an international tender to lease beaches with leisure facilities in Alimos and Vouliagmeni, south of Athens.
Attikes Aktes (Beaches of Attica) - the consortium that will operate the beaches - comprises Attikat, Terina, Ithaki and Achinos, Hellenic said in a statement.
Hellenic Tourism Real Estate is a subsidiary of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, which has a strategy of leasing or selling its assets.
A preliminary contract has also been signed for leases on beaches in Voula and Varkiza, south of Athens, with another winner in the tender - a consortium comprising Vernicos Yachts, EFG Eurobank Properties, Everest, Ev Zin and V+0 Communications Resources.
 A German plane effected forced landing in ThessalonikiA plane carrying out a charter flight from Stuttgart to Bodrum, in SW Asia Minor, made an emergency landing at Thessaloniki's airport Monday morning after a passenger reportedly opened a can of ether, causing respiratory problems for the 168 people on board.
The plane was evacuated and ventilated after it landed at Thessaloniki's Macedonia airport, before taking off again for Bodrum -ancient Halicarnassus- at around 4 p.m.
The name of the company operating the plane was not provided.
 Athens BourseThe week begun with a few losses. On Monday, the general index closed below 2,800 units, at 2,791.42 points, even though it had reached 2815,95.
The volume of transactions reached 133.0 million Euro and the index closed at 0.53%.
145 stocks had profits, 176 recorded losses and 53 remained stable.
