    [01] Scientific cooperation on earthquakes

    US, Greek, Turkish and Italian research centers will start today, a wide spread scientific cooperation to assess the danger of an earthquake occurring in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean and to register the seismic activity of the Northern Anatolia breach, which ranges from Turkey to mainland Greece. The cooperation agreement is expected to be signed in Piraeus on the August 2nd.

    [02] Life returns to normal on Skyros

    Life on the island of Skyros, is now returning to normal despite the fact that aftershocks continue. Scientists have assessed that the worst is over, as according to all the indications, Thursday s seismic tremor was the main one. Meanwhile, experts continue recording the damages. So far, 148 houses have been inspected. 44 need repairs and 101 are habitable.

    Opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Kostas Karamanlis visited Skyros yesterday and was briefed on the situation that prevails after the quake. Mr. Karamanlis stated that dealing with the water supply system and the damages was the main priority. ND will be here to offer its help and exert pressure so that the governments commitments become deeds, he said.

    [03] PM Simitis visit to Paros

    Addressing a ruling PASOK party rally at Paroikia on the island of Paros on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis said the government wants to build a steadfast and strong Greece in Europe in the decades to come, a Greece which will not return to the past, but which will win the present and conquer the future.

    The prime minister defined development, the new social state and the boosting of Greeces position internationally as the three basic targets of the governments policy, while he also referred to the programs on the fishery and the water supply system of the Cyclades. He then underlined that the government and the entire Greek people guaranteed the success of the 2004 Olympic games. Finally, Mr. Simitis accused the ND party stressing that the partys platform referred to the 60s and 70s.

    [04] The Greek PM s planned statements on social measures

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis will announce at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, a package of social measures to the tune of 1.5 trillion drachmas. The measures will be including additional funds to boost the low salaried, tax reductions and improvements in the sectors of education and health.

    On Friday, it was decided during a meeting under the prime minister, that 680 billion drachmas would be available to boost unemployed receiving low pensions and people with special needs in the three year period 2002-2004. In this framework, the government is making plans to increase the pensions of OGA (farmers) and EKAS by 5.000 drachmas, and also an increase to unemployment benefit and family allowances to both spouses.

    [05] Doctors salaries will be doubled

    According to an article carried with the Athens Sunday paper "To Vima Tis Kyriakis", the salaries of hospital doctors, nurses and personnel will e doubled as of January 1st, 2002 and afternoon outpatient clinics will start operating the same date. Meanwhile, members of the Thessaloniki Aristotelio Faculty of Medicine issued an announcement yesterday, stating that they will continue abstaining from their work in clinics, accusing of "hypocrisy" the president of the hospital AHEPA and the director of the Newly established First Emergency Unit of Central Macedonia.

    [06] Fires now under control

    The fires that broke out in Sayada-Thesprotia, Prespes-Florina, Velouhi-Karpenisi, Messini-Preveza and Itea-Alexandroupolis are now fully under control.

    [07] Banks - euro coins

    Banks will start being supplied with euro coins as of September 1st, so that they have enough time to distribute them according to the foreign exchange transactions of each branch.

    [08] Film director Angelopoulos in hospital

    World renowned film director Theodoros Angelopoulos, is being treated in the intensive care unit of the Heraklion university hospital, with an infection of the respiratory system. ิhe famous Greek director was brought in on Friday, with chest pains.
