Winds northwesterly, light to moderate. On the mainland, temperatures will range from 19C to 35C; and in the islands from 22C to 31C. Hot and sunny in Athens with temperatures between 23C and 34C. Same in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 22C to 33C.[02] Demonstrations against police violence in GenoaCounter reactions in protest of the Italian police tough stand against demonstrators is escalating. The Social Forum in Genoa will stage demonstrations against police violence in many cities in Italy. The Greek Committee for the International Demonstration in Genoa has also organized a march to the Italian embassy in Athens.In the US, 200 demonstrators gathered outside the Italian Consulate in Portland, Oregon to protest against police violence while in Montreal Canada, a demonstration was staged to denounce the killing of the 23 year old Italian demonstrator. In the meantime Canada will host the G-8 summit in a remote resort in the Rocky Mountains next year . Italian authorities freed Greek demonstrator Peroulis Sakellaridis arrested during the demonstrations in Genoa while Panagiotis Sideridis is under guard in hospital with serious charges pending against him. In Athens, Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas called for the isolation of the violent groups of demonstrators but stressed that those who ignore the willingness of the people will be judged by history. The Greek Communist and the Coalition of the Left parties criticized the government s stand while the General Secretary of the GCP, Aleca Papariga denounced that senior members of the Greek police, Hellas cooperated with the Italian police authorities in the monitoring of Greek demonstrators. [03] Prime-minister Simitis contacts in view of the Pasok Party congressFollowing his meeting with Prime-minister Kostas Simitis yesterday, Pasok party deputy Theodoros Pangalos said he was in favour of Mr.Simtis re-election to the post of the partys President. Mr.Pangalos also did not rule out the possibility to run for the post of the Pasok party General Secretary.Prime-minister Simitis will meet with Interior Minister Vaso Papandreou within the framework of contacts in view of the Pasok party congress in October. Prime-minister Simitis will meet with National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou today to discuss next year s state budget. The government s economic staff is trying to draw up a feasible plan of tax relieves while in parallel maintain fiscal stability. [04] Reception at the Presidential Mansion on the restoration of democracyThe President of the Republic will tonight host a reception on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece.[05] Legislative measures to deal with water shortageFollowing a meeting with Primeminister Simitis, Environment Minister Kostas Laliotis announced that legislative measures concerning the management of the country s water resources will be passed till the end of the year in order to deal with the problem of water shortage.[06] Strikes in protest against privatisations of oil and chemical industriesThe Panhellenic Federation of Workers in refineries and the chemical and oil industries begin 48hour rotating strikes today in protest at the government s decision to proceed to the privatization of the state owned industries.[07] Oil prices further down this weekA new drop in oil price is expected this week, with gasoline going down by 5,5dr per litter and diezel oil by 5 drs per litter.[08] Prime-minister Simitis to visit Yiaros to honour April 1974 coup victimsOn the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece, Primeminister Simitis will visit the island of Yiaros, place of exile during the period of the April 21st coup, to honour the victims of the antidictatorship struggle.[09] The US can not support the Kyoto pact as it standsIn talks with Japanese Prime minister Junichiro Koizumi, American State Secretary Colin Powell stressed that the US could not support the Kyoto Pact as it stands but will continue negotiations with Japan and other countries towards a global framework that deals effectively with the problem of global warming adding that the US was putting forward ideas on technological initiatives and reviews.During the 50 minute talks, Japanese Prime minister Koizumi told Powell that Japan would continue efforts to convince Washington on the benefits of the Kyoto pact.
