    [01] No government reshuffle, says PM Simitis

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of a government reshuffle until his ruling PASOK party's congress on October 11-14.

    In a statement after the party's Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday night, Simitis said that a reshuffle now would be incompatible with the purpose of the congress which judges policies and persons and defines policies.

    The prime minister said the government was struggling on a daily basis to achieve its targets and for this to be achieved accord and clear policies are necessary. Internal distractions and introversion make such a task difficult, he added.

    In statements after the Executive Bureau's meeting, PASOK's Central Committee Secretary Costas Skandalidis said it decided that the party's congress will take place on October 11-14 and will make a recommendation to the Central Committee which will convene on July 9.

    Skandalidis said the Central Committee meeting whic was due to be held on July 13-14 in Ancient Olympia on local administration issues, will not take place and a one-day meeting will be held in Athens with the proclamation of the congress being the only issue. He added that the first meeting of the new Central Committee to be elected by the forthcoming congress, will be held in Ancient Olympia.

    The Central Committee which will decide on positions to be submitted to the congress will convene together with the Parliamentary Group between August 31 and September 1.

    [02] Supreme Court ruling on ID cards

    The plenum of the Athens Supreme Court has, by majority, ruled as anti-constitutional either the compulsory or the optional religious affiliation on the new identity cards.

    [03] IOC Vice-president visits Athens

    The vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Dick Pound - perhaps one of Jacques Rogues most important rival in the race for the succession of IOC president Juan Antionio Samaranch - is currently vinisitng Athens.

    Mr Pound will have contacts with Greek sponsors of the 2004 Olympic Games and will be briefed on the relative preparations by the president of the organising committee "Athens 2004" Yanna Angelopoulou - Daskalaki.

    Meanwhile, the Church of Greeceis going ahead with an International bid regarding the construction of a hotel in Athens which will be used for the needs of the 2004 Olympics, as the press spokesman of the Standing Holy Synod, metropolitan bishop Efstathios of Sparti announced.

    [04] Social Security reforms ready by October

    Labour minister Tasos Yannitsis, after meeting the board of the Federation of Greek Industries ( SEV in Greek ) yesterday, stated that the govt will carry on working in order to prepare the social security reforms and have them ready by October.

    SEV agreed to cooperate on the issue with the ministry's scientific staff and requested overtime work to apply the euro.

    At the same time, a report released recently by the European commission on the fiscal situation in the EU member countries includes indirect suggestions to speed up and intensify efforts as regards social security reforms.

    [05] IKA doctors - Still on strike

    Problems are still present in the sector of health, as doctors of IKA - the Social Security Fund - continue their strike action. Representatives of the doctors met yesterday with labout minister Tasos Yannitsis and the governor of IKA, but failed to reach an agreement.

    [06] No Water shortage in Athens

    The managing director of EYDAP The Greek Water Sypply and Sewage Public Corporation, Dionysios Xenos, stated yesterday that no water shortage problem will occur in Athens.

    He also announced that a briefing campaign will be launched as regards proper use of water, stressing that the current water resources are enough to last for two years, while they are expected to increase by the end of the year, after works are completed in the river Evinos.

    [07] EUREKA meeting in Spain

    Development minister Nikos Christodoulakis will participate today and tomorrow to the minister's meeting of the European Initiative "EUREKA" in Spain.

    Greece will assume the presidency on July 1st and the activities of the Initiative will be presented at the International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki in a special area of the Greek development ministry's pavillion.

    The basic goals of the Initiatvie "EUREKA" include international cooperation in technologies and promotion of orientation works covering market needs and at the same time increased productivity, as well as creating new jobs.

    [08] Changes in fuel prices

    Fuel price change again for one week in Greece. The price of gas will drop by 7 drs per litre and diesel by 5 drs.

    [09] Athens bourse

    On the Athens stock exchange, the general share price index went significantly up by 2.27% on Thursday, closing at 2,698.19 points, following seven consecutive session of intense downard trends.

    [10] New general directors in ERT

    Yesterday, the administrative board of Greek public radio and television ERT appointed Antonis Andrikakis to the post of general director of Greek Radio and Manos Efstratiadis to the post of general director of Greek Television - ET-1.

    [11] Athens summer sales and extra bus lines

    Summer sales will start next Monday, July 2nd and will last till August 31. The summer itinararies in urban transport will be in force from July 1st to August 31st.

    Extra buses will be added to the coastal lines of Attica, Glyfada, Voula, Barkiza, Bouliagmeni and Loutsa, while an extra express line Akadimia - Varkiza will also be added.
