    [01] Conference on the Greeks living abroad

    During PASOK s second Pan-European Conference entitled Europe s Hellenism in the New Era held in Frankfurt discussions focused on issues related to the Greeks living abroad.

    Ending the Conference, PASOK s Central Committee Secretary Costas Scandalides stressed that PASOK party was not just talking polics but it was dealing with the arising problems. He also hailed the fact that from now on Greeks living abroad could vote from the country they were living in, as well as PASOKs insistence for the institutionalization of the Council of Greeks living abroad and its faster promotion.

    [02] 5,5 Richter scale earthquake causes damages in Psara

    A strong earthquake measuring 5,5 on the Richter scale that took place in the sea area between the islands of Chios and Psara yesterday afternoon caused damages in houses in Psara. The quake was felt in Athens as well as in seaside towns in Turkey.

    [03] Attempts to invert the existing political climate

    While senarios for a government reshuffle are being discussed by many politicians, government cadres are proposing ways to invert the present political climate. In her interview with the newspaper To Ethnos Tis Kyriakis Interior minister Vaso Papandreou makes eight proposals that will allow a new start for PASOK ruling party.

    She believes that the governing party still has a chance to succeed provided it re-determines its policy and does not repeat the mistakes it has made since the elections. Besides, in an interview with the TV Channel Alpha former Culture minister Theodoros Pangalos said among other things that Prime Minister Costas Simitis had lost the confidence of the people who had voted PASOK party.

    In tandem, he stated that measures should be taken immediately so that PASOK party would not end being an opposition party. From his side, the Secretary of the party s Cenral Committee Costas Scandalides stresses that the party s Social and Political front must be revised in view of the elections in 2004.

    [04] Strikes in the Health sector

    Doctors of the Social Insurance Fund are beginning a series of five-day strikes as of today for one month demanding the withdrawal of the draft-bill regarding first aid care and its upgrading as well as a status of permancy for their fellow doctors in the Social Security Fund.

    Additionally, the employees of Public Hospitals will go on a 24-hour strike next Wednesday, demanding a rise in salaries, the hiring of more personel and the non-change of the existing Labour Status.

    Besides, hospital doctors in Athens and Pireaus will participate in the strike to be staged by the General Confederation of Greek Workers and the Civil Servants s Union, protesting to the government s policy on the Social Security System issue.

    [05] Merging of Social Insurance Funds legal

    The merging of all Social Insurance Funds that took place in 1999 through a legislative act has been described as constitutional and legal by the plenum of the State Council.

    [06] Drug trafficking in the Aegean

    According to a report of the Merchant Marine ministry a drug-racket organized by Greek-Columbian cartel of cocaine is making business s in the Aegean Sea. Some points of the report saw the press yesterday.

    [07] Robbers remove 200 million drs from Delta dairy company

    The four robbers, who robbed the DELTA dairy-company in Taurus yesterday evening taking 200 million drachmas after tying the company s accountant, have not been arrested yet.
