    [01] Weather forecast

    Mostly sunny weather is forecast throughout the country. Winds notherly moderate, turning strong in the Aegean.

    In Attica temperature will range from 13-25 degrees Celcius, in Thessaloniki from 10-22 degrees C and on the islands from 14-23 degrees C.

    GCGW released report with proposals on reforms in social securty system

    The General Confederation of Greek Workers yesterday released its proposals on the issue of reforms in the social security system.

    The extension of tripartite funding to all employees paying social security, the proper utilisation of revenues from pension funds, the compulsory insuring of all immigrants and the unification of similar funds are among the main positions set out in the report drawn by the Labour Institute of the GCGW.

    According to the GCGW - which has announced a general strike on May 17th - this report will be the base for the forthcoming dialogue.

    On his part, Labour Minister Tasos Yianitsis expressed some reservations about the cofederations stance but emphasised that he was optimistic about dialogue on pension reforms, stressing that all sides involved appeared willing to give an answer to the problem.

    [02] Education Minister determined to pass bill on the upgrading of technological institutes

    Tension continues in the field of tertiary education, as Education Minister Petros Efthimiou appears determined to table in the parliament the controversial draftbill upgrading state technical colleges without any changes.

    University deans - who object to a new draftbill providig for the upgrading of state techincal colleges - met yesterday to decide on whether to submit mass resignations.

    The assessment of technical institutions within 3 years, the withdrawal of provisions concerning post-graduate studies, and the classification of technical institutions as supplementary to universities were the 3 conditions they set in order to remain in their posts.

    [03] Prime-minister satisfied at the progress of preparations for the Olympic Games

    The progress of sports facilities being constructed for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games was the focus of yesterday's bi-ministerial meeting chaired by Prime-minister Kostas Simitis.

    Following the meeting, Mr Simitis stressed that preparations for the games were proceeding effectively - a fact, he pointed out, that was also noted by the International Olympic Committee during its recent visit to Greece.

    [04] Turkey has to bind to its commitments for accession to the EU

    On the sidelines of the EU General Affairs Council, Belgian Foreign Minister Loui Michel referred to the situation in Turkish jails, stressing that Turkey should bound to its committments for admission into the EU.

    The head of the Greek diplomatic delegation also referred to the inconsinstency of words and deeds by Turkey as well as Ancara's intrasigent stance both in the Cyprus issue and its relations with Athens.

    [05] Greek Foreign Minister will meet with his American counterpart in Washinghton

    Greek Foreign Minister Giorge Papadreou will meet with his American counterpart Colin Powell Washinghton on Monday.

    During his visit to the US, Mr.Papadreou will meet with the American Vice-president Dick Chenney, national security advisor Kontolina Rhais as well as the leadership of the House of Representatives.

    Talks will focus on bilateral, regional and Balcan issues.

    [06] Cyprus President will brief political party leaders

    Cyprus President Glafkos Klerides will have separate meetings with Cyprus party leaders to brief them on his talks during his recent visit to Athens.

    At the meetings, Mr. Klerides is also expected to discuss the convening of the national council in order to study how to best utlise a recent decision by the European Court of human rights, condemning Turkey for mass human rights violations in Cyprus.

    In the meantime, British Labour party deputies have assured that the Cyprus issue remains among the priorities of the British administration which supports a solution according to the UN resolutions.

    [07] Olympic Airways privatisation at final stage

    The privatisation of the Olympic Airways has entered its final stage. The 3 bids submitted for the purchase of the majority stake in the national air carrier were opened yesterday.

    The bidders are the Restis Group, Axon Airlines and a consortium led by Cyprus Airways.

    The tender consultant Credt Suisse First Boston is to recommend one of the 3 bids to the goverment till the end of May ad negotiations will follow.

    [08] Stay permit for thousands of immgrants

    A new bill in effect from June 2nd provides for a stay permit to thousands of immigrants in Greece. Necessary precondition is the submission of the necessary documents within 2-months.

    [09] Trillions spent in lottery games

    Greeks spent over 1,3 trillion dr in lottery games with Stihima coming first.

    [10] Fuel prices up

    Fuel prices go up as from tomorrow. Gasoline will go up by 7 dr. per litter and diezel oil by 2,5 per litter.
