[01] Meeting of Prime-minister Simitis with Labour Mnister opens dialogue on
reforms in the social security system
Prime-minister Kostas Simitis today's meeting with Labour Minister
Tasos Yannitsis and undersecretary Nikos Farmakis opens the dialogue on
reforms in the social security system . The final proposals for the
social security system will be announced by the goverment on Thursday,
after a joint meeting of the cabinet and the ruling PASOK party's
executive office. Talks with various involved parties will subsequently
follow. Meanwhile, National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou and
Labour Minister Tasos Yannitsis met on Tuesday and examined eventual
changes in the social security system on the basis of the British
agency report which has already been handed to the leadership of the
Labour Ministry. After the meeting, both ministers refused to disclose
their proposals. However , National Economy Minister Yiannos
Papantoniou said that the goverment's aim was to ensure social justice
while on his part Labour Minister Tasos Yiannitsis stressed the
importace of takig measures that would not shatter people's faith in
the system , in relation to pensios and provisions for the elderly .
Referring to the same issue , Press undersecretary Tilemachos Chytiris
stressed that the goverment's aim was to ensure pensions for all the
Greeks for the next 50 years within the framework of a stability and
developmental policy . He also added that workers had no reason
whatsoever to be concerned. Nevertheless, workers' unions are
threatening the goverment with open conflicts in the event various
scenarios about the merging of social security funds and other changes
they radically object to come true. In another development, Prime-
minister Simitis will meet with National Defense Minister Akis
Tsochatzopoulos on Friday, in order to clear up the differences in
opinion regarding a recent decision to cut back defence spending.
[02] Turkish Foreign Minister visits the occupied sector of Cyprus
Within the framework of a three-day visit to the occupied sector of
Cyprus, the Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem met on Tuesday with the
Turkish-Cypriot political leadership. According to the Turkish-Cypriot
newspaper ''Avrupa'' the aim of the visit was to persuade
Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to accept Turkey's new strategy on
the Cyprus issue and to resume UN-sponsored proximity talks. Following
the meeting, the Turkish Foreign Minister said he had come to hear the
views of the political leadership and gave reassurances that Ankara
would continue to support the self-declared Turkish-Cypriot state,
called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognised only by
Turkey.
[03] Ecumenical Patriarch criticised the Church of Greece
Ecumenical patriarch Vartholomeos criticized the Church of Greece on
Monday, accusing those who did not respect the role and history of the
Orthodox Patriarchate, as perpetrators of matricide. He also expressed
the view that ethnic Greeks living in Constantinople were victims of
the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and of Greek-Turkish disputes.
[04] Last details for Pope John Paul visit to Greece
Meanwhile, in Athens, the head of the Greek Orthodox Church, Archbishop
Christodoulos will have an opportunity for a private discussion with
the Pope. According to reliable sources, the pontiff plans to invite
him to dinner during his upcoming visit to Greece next month. A
delegation of the Vatican will arrive in Greece today to plan the last
details of Pope John Paull II schedule - who is expected in Greece on
May 4. The Pope's program includes a joint statement with Archbishop
Christodoulos and a mass at the indoor Olympic stadium in the suburb of
Marousi.
[05] Greek basketball team Amarusio won the Supporta Cup
A great night in Warsow, on Tuesday for the Greek basketball with the
team of Amarousio beating 74-72 the French team Elan-Salon in the
Supporta Cup finals. The speaker of the Greek parliament Apostolos
Kaklamanis congratulated the Greek players, while the residents of the
municipality of Amarousio celebrated the team's victory .
[06] Greek economy growth rate 4,8%
According to the biannual report of the European Commission - to be
released on April 25 - the growth rate of the Greek ecoomy is estimated
around 4.8% compared to the 5% growth rate estimated by the Greek
National Economy Ministry . The report also predicts a slow -down in
the drop of the inflation rate and difficulties in achieving the goal
of a 0.5% surplus .
[07] Prime-minister Simitis deied rumours about a goverment's reshuffle
Prime-minister Simitis addressing members of the Pasok party
prefectural and regional committees categorically denied rumours about
a goverment reshuffle . Greek Foreign Minister believes crisis in FYROM
would not extend any further . In a recent interview with the Yugoslav
newsagency SENSE, the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou
expressed optimism that the crisis in neighbouring FYROM (Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) would not extend any further. The Greek
foreign minister underlined that it could be overcome through joint
efforts on the part of the United States, the European Union and
countries of southeastern Europe. Greece, Mr Papandreou pointed out,
could be of assistance with its experience in the work of reforms and
implementation of European Union law.
[08] Cyprus President on a private visit to Egypt
The Cypriot President Glafkos Kliridis who is on a private visit to
Egypt will have various contacts there, while he is also expected to
have a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak. On
Wednesday , President Kliridis will meet Patriarch Petros of Alexandria
at the monastery of Saint George in Cairo, while in the evening he will
attend a dinner the Egyptian ambassador to Nicosia Omar Metuali will
host in his honor.
[09] Four illegal immigrants died of cold
Four illegal immigrants ,2 men and 2 women paid with their lives their
dream for a better life . In their effort along with 8 others to cross
the Greek-Bulgarian borders ,they died of cold on the Belles mountain .
The other 8 illegal immigrants were arrested by Greek border guards .
[10] Fuel prices up
Fuel prices icrease as from Thursday , with gasoline going up by 7 drs.
per litter and heating oil by 5,5 drs per litter .
[11] Athens stock market
On the Athens stock exchange, the general share price index went up by
0.82% on Tuesday, to close at 3,185.50 points.
[12] Balcan symposium of English language teachers in Alexandropolis
The Balkan symposium of English-language teachers will be held in
Alexandroupolis on April 27 to 29, with the participation of teachers
from primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education, from Greece,
Bulgaria, Turkey and Yugoslavia. Parallel to the conference sessions,
an international book fair will also take place and guided tours of the
Evros region will be available to participants. The symposium was
organized by the Thracian Association of English Teachers, in
collaboration with the Balkan Association of Education and the
Alexandroupolis municipality.
[13] Three seamen, crew members of Safmarine-Galana lost their lives
Three seamen, including a Greek national, lost their lives on Monday,
when the Cyprus-flagged cargo ship ''Safmarin- Galana'' caught fire
near the port of Durban in South Africa. 52 year old Dimitris Chaviaras
- the ship's second engineer - together with a Lithuanian and a Indian
sailor, was trapped in his cabin when the fire broke out in the crew's
recreation area. There were no other injuries or casualties on board
the vessel.
[14] Weather forecast
Local showers are forecast for most of the country ,with conditions
gradually improving from the West . Attica will have a cloudy day ,with
early mornig showers and temperatures ranging from 11-21 degrees
Celcius . Similar weather conditios in Thessaloniki ,where temperatures
will range from 8-17 degrees Celcius .
