[02] Earthquake shakes northern GreeceA strong earthquake measuring 5,7 on the Richter scale took place at 8:40pm in Konitsa. The earthquake was felt in Yiannina, Corfu, Trikala and Southern Albania.[03] Urban centre holiday makers begin their exodusThe mass exodus of residents of Athens for Easter holidays is beginning today.Despite the forcast of the National Meteorological Service for a rainy weather tickets for planes, ships and coaches are difficult to get. The Railway Organisation of Greece is planning to use additional trains to cover the needs of the people. Due to Easter holidays shops and supermarkets will remain open during week days until Thursday until 9pm. [04] Measures for drought to be taken in GreecePrime minister Costas Simitis met with Agriculture minister Yiorgos Anomeritis and minister of the Aegean Nikos Sifounakis yesterday to discuss the issue of drought.During the meeting the participants examined among other things the increase of credit for the construction of projects, the speeding up of works under way and the purchase of ships that could carry water. The government plans to anounce the measures regarding drought right after Easter Holidays. The prolonged drought is expected to create problems in the islands, while cultivations in the mainland have begun experiencing the first problems. More than 1,3 billion drachmas are expected to be spent to islands suffering from the shortage of water, while projects are planned in Thessaly and Viotia to solve the problem. On Sunday, Cypriot Foreign minister Yiannakis Kassoulides called on the United States to continue showing interest for the solution of the Cyprus issue. At the same time, the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides appeared optimistic as regards Cyprus' accession course to the European Union. In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Mr. Kasoulides asked from Washington to take seriously under cosideration Cuprus' accession to the European Union since as he said that might help in effors for the solution of the problem. Within the framework of his official visit to the United States Mr. Kasoulides met with the Secretary of State Colin Powell and American President's advisor on national security issues Kondoliza Rais a few hours ago. [05] Greece's armaments programme causes headache to PMPrime minister Costas Simitis is going to meet with National Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos after Easter. Mr. Tsohatzopoulos seems to be unsatisfied with the decrease of oulays for Greece's armaments programme.At the same time, in an attempt to diffuse tension between him and Mr. Tsohatzoulos, National Economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou stated that the Defence minister had been briefed on the decision for the decrease of outlays for the armanments programme before the cabinet meeting. At the same time, in an interview with Mega TV station, the National Economy minister stated that even after the freezing of expenditure for the "Eurofighter", Greece will have spent about 4,5% of its gross national product on armaments in comparison to 2% spent by other NATO countries.
