    [01] Prime-minister Simitis concluded his visit to India

    Addressing the Confederation of Indian Industrialists in Bombay yesterday , Prime-minister Kostas Simitis said that Greece held a leading position in the list of suitable countries for investments , because of its political and economic stability .

    Simitis also stressed that Greece was a stability power in South-eastern Europe ,playing a specially important political and economic role .

    Concluding he expressed the hope that his visit to India would give further impetus to commercial relations between the two countries . Prime- minister Kostas Simitis has concluded his official visit to India and returns to Greece today.

    [02] Washinghton does not share allegations by former US embassy employee

    The Greek goverment has reacted with outrage and anger to a recent report in the " Los Angeles Times " , which questions security arrangemets for the " 2004 Olympic Games " in Athens and to subsequent discussions focusing on terrorism , following statements by CIA chief George Tenett - who urged Greece to intensify ts efforts to counter terrorism .

    In response ,the Greek goverment has once again reassured that Greece would carry out succesfully -without the slightest problem - the organisation of the 2004 Olympic Games .

    Press undersecratary Tilemahos Hitiris described the article as contemptible and accused the writer Wayne Merry -a former US embassy employee in Athens - of being hired to slander Greece .

    In the meantime , the American State Department took a clear distance from allegations by former US embassy employee in Athens .

    Last night , American State Department spokesman Richard Bowcher stated that Washinghton did not share Mr.Merry's accusations about links of the Greek goverment with terrorist organsations ,underlining the harmonic cooperation of Greek and American competent services on the issue of terrorism .

    Mr.Bowcher also said that there was no information about a possible terrorist attack during the Olympic games in Athens ,he noted ,however that all necessary measures should be taken during the games .

    [03] National Defence Minister - described as a dream permanent peace in the Balcans

    National Defence Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos visited the city of Urocevac in Kossovo yesterday ,head of a delegation of the Foreign and Defence Affairs Parliamentary Committee .

    In his address to the Greek peace keeping force he described as a far dream , the achievement of permanent peace and stability in the Balkans

    However, he added that the present conditions indicated that violence and clashes in the region were coming to a final end .

    Mr. Tsochatzopulos also said that all international organisations will conclude their research on the impact from the use of depleted uranium bombs in Kossovo within March, adding that all counts by Greek scientists showed that radioactivity was at normal levels.

    [04] Greek proposals for the aversion of a new crisis in Southern Serbia

    The Greek government will present a number of proposals at the European Union General Affairs Committee on February 26, for the aversion of a new crisis in Southern Serbia.

    Escalation of tension in the region and the situation in the Balkans were the main subjects of talks between Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou and his Bulgarian counterpart Natelda Michailova, who was received yesterday by the President of the Republic Costis Stephanopoulos.

    [05] Technological institutes upgraded

    The draftbill providing for the upgrading of Technological Institutes will be tabled in the Parliament at the end of the month , despite reactions by University professors, who believe that the move is un-constitutional.

    [06] Arguments on the opening date of the new airport

    Although , Transport Minister Hristos Verelis is soon expected to announce the date of the opening of the new airport in Spata ,there are still some arguments on the opening date between the Environment Ministry and aviation companies .

    Environment Minister , Kostas Laliotis spoke of misinformation and games by aviation companies while the representatives of IATA,- who are in Greece - are likely to ask for a postponment of the opening date on the grounds that access to the airport is difficult since the road network has not been completed .

    From his side, the Public Works General Secretary has attributed the companies' reaction to the high rates of the new airport.

    [07] Church of Greece - Ecumenic Patriarchate

    The crisis between the Church of Greece and the Ecumenical Patriarchate seems to be deepening since the later refuses to draw an agenda of the subjects to be discussed in Constaninople on February 22 and 24 - a pre-condition set by the Greek Church for the materialisation of the meeting.

    Labour Ministry draftbill to ban heavy child labour

    The Labour ministry is promoting a draft bill aimed to ban heavy child labour as it is estimated that over 80.000 young people under the age of 19 are employed, while about 15.000 young people abandon compulsive education every year.

    [09] Yiannis Xenakis

    Music Composer Yiannis Xenakis was burried at the cemetery of Per Lasez, in Paris yesterday. Present were relatives and friends, while his body was cremated according to his last wish.

    [10] Stock exchange

    Thursday's session of the Athens stock market closed at 3157,52 points with a 0,88% rise .

    [11] Weather forecast

    A partly cloudy day for Attica, with temperatures ranging from 8 to 19 degrees centigarde. Similar weather conditions are expected for Thessaloniki, where temperatures will range from 7 to 16 degrees centigrade.
