[01] Simitis is currently in India

He also reiterated that Turkey's stance in the Cyprus dispute was of crucial importance and pointed out that Greece had undertaken a number of initiatives to improve bilateral relations- including supporting Turkey's candidacy.

In reply to a question whether the same model of improvement in Greek-Turkish relations could be used in the case of India and Pakistan, Mr Simitis said it was possible, but there had to be political will and the ability to overcome the viewpoint that whoever compromises, loses. Compromises were necessary, he said, and disputes should not be resolved with weapons and the use of force.

Referring to his official visit to India, the prime minister described Greek- Indian relations as excellent and expressed Athens' intention to contribute to a further strengthening of bilateral ties.

Yesterday, prime minister Simitis inaugurated the new Greek embassy building in New Delhi.

[02] A delegation of International Olympic Committee is in Athens

In meetings with the committee this week, the Greek government will present its arguments in favour of its recent decision to change plans for a multisports centre in the Faliro Delta area and to deal with the tension caused by environment organisations' objections to an Olympic rowing centre at Schinia.

[03] Joint Greek-Cypriot military exercise is continuing

According to a Cypriot defence ministry announcement, the exercise, which is taking place within the context of the Joint Defence Pact, will wind up on Friday and will test the participation of bodies incorporated in the civil emergencies plan.

[04] The new airport at Spata would be ready in March

Mr Laliotis added that parking will be prohibited all along Mesoghion avenue and described a recent traffic study- forecasting heavy congestion all the way to the airport- as the product of ignorance.

Meanwhile, the new international airport at Spata would be ready for operation in March. The last trial run- with a volunteer group acting as passengers- took place yesterday. Similar trials have been underway since October, with the participation of about 5,000 volunteers.

In a related development, the environmental group "Greenpeace" yesterday occupied a section of the Attica road, in protest against the alleged use of toxic materials in the construction of the anti-skid asphalt surface. The groups maintain that high levels of dioxins have been utilized, which pose serious problems for the environment and public health.
