    [01] Cecure motion against National Economy Minister voted down by the parliament

    With a roll-call vote shortly after midnight ,the parliament voted down the censure motion agaist the National Economy Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou.

    The censure motion was initiated by the main opposition ND party, attributing responsibility to Mr.Papantoniou for the plummeting general share price index on the Athens Stock Exchange.

    The result of the roll-call vote could be interpreted as a vote of confdence to the goverment since Prime-minister Simitis had earlier stated that a censure motion against a Minister was a censure motion against the goverment. Addressing the parliament on Thursday, Mr. Simitis said that the issue of the Stock Exchange should not become the subject of petty partisan policy, accusing New Democracy party of demagogy. Mr.Simitis also stressed that criterio of the goverment's policies was not the bourse's performance but rather the country's development and an increase in living standards. On his part, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis launched a strong attack against the government and the National Economy Minister referring to uprecedended political fraud and financial destruction of thousands of investors. In reply, National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou accused the New Democracy party of seeking to damage the Athens Stock Exchange for petty partisan reasons and described it as a third world party.

    The Secretary General of the Greek Communist party Aleka Papariga accused both the government and the main opposition of trying to take advantage of the present situation in the Athens Stock Exchange for their own reasons. In the meantime, the General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange recorded a slight drop of 0,52% on Thursday to close at 3.247,87 points.

    [02] Athens monitoring escalation of tension in South Serbia

    Athens is carefully monitoring developments in Southern Serbia. The Foreign ministry has already called on the United Nations and the International Community to take measures to fight violence in the region. In the meantime, violent incidents continue in Mitrovitsa, while French soldiers of the international peace keeping force stationing in Kossovo, clashed with ethnic Albanians on Thursday.

    Greek Foreign Minister Giorge Papandreou expressed his concen over the recent developments in South Serbia and Kossovo while a NATO spokesman stressed that the alliance would take all necessary measures to avert cooperation of extremist organisations whose aim is to create the great Albania instigating violence in Kossovo, Serbia and FYROM.

    [03] Oil deposits in Cyprus linked with determination of the island's continental shelf

    The existence of oil deposits in the sea region of Cyprus has taken up large dimensions as the issue is linked with the determination of the continental shelf of the island. In the meantime, except for Egypt, Israel has also shown interest for the exploitation of the oil deposits.

    [04] Turkish Foreign Minister accusses the US ad Britain of implementing Greek positions on the Cyprus issue

    Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem blamed the US and Britain for having undertaken the mission to implement the Greek positions on the Cyprus issue.

    Briefing Turkish reporters' on the recent developments in the Cyprus issue, after his meeting with the UN, special representative Alvaro de Soto, Mr.Cem also accused the EU for having made two mistakes, that is, accepting the Greek-Cypriots unilateral application for admission into the EU and linking Turkey-EU admission procedures with the Cyprus issue.

    [05] Cabinet meeting on Thursday examined infrustructure and organisation of 2004 Olympic Games

    The infrastructure and the organisation of the Olympic Games as well as the tourist policy to be implemented in the future were the main subjects examined during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, chaired by Prime minister Costas Simitis.

    Development Minister Nikos Christodoulakis stressed that each tourist visiting Greece in March and November would receive 40 Euros. Furthermore, it was decided that emphasis should be given to alternative forms of tourism and the organisation of international conferences on ecology. From his side, Culture Minister Evagelos Venizelos stated that the bidding for the OLympic village would take place in the next days.

    [06] National Defece Minister will attend the 37th conference on Security Policy

    National Defence Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos will fly to Munich on Friday to attend the 37th conference on Security, Policy, scheduled to be held from 2-4 Feburary.

    [07] Meeting of Greek Development undersecretary with the Giorgian undersecretary for Industry and Trade

    Trade cooperation between Greece and Giorgia as well as investments in the fields of industry, energy and tourism were the subjects of talks during the meeting of Greek undersecretary for Development, Alexandros Kalafatis with Georgian Economy, Industry and Commerce undersecretary Natia Turnava.

    [08] Twin schools in Thessaloniki and Richmond, Australia will communicate through the Internet

    School students of the 11th Primary School of Ambelokipi, in Thessaloniki and Yiara Primary School in Richmond, Melbourne, will be able to communicate and exhange information and pictures of their countries through the Internet on the occasion of the tighening of bonds between the twin cities of Thessaloniki and Melbourne.

    [09] Both spouses entitled to receive the family bonus

    According to the Supreme Court ruling both spouses working in the public sector are entitled of receiving the family bonus.

    [10] German Konstantin Berig arrested on Thursday

    German Frants Konstantine Bering, accused of having persuaded throught the Internet 15 year old American Lintsei Samrok to leave her home in Florida and come to meet him in Greece, was arrested in Pendeli on Thursday. Mr. Bering will appear before the public prosecutor in Thessaloniki on Friday.

    [11] Weather forecast

    Gradual deterioration of the weather with rain, storms and north winds and snowfalls in some regions. In Athens temperatures will range from 9-14 degrees centigrade and in Thessaloniki from 1-15 degrees centigrade.
