    [01] Ban on beef from France

    A few hours after the meeting of the Agriculture ministers Council in Brussels last night regarding the mad cow disease, Greece decided to ban as of today imports of French beef with bones and also withdraw it from the market.

    In addition, it banned the import of animals for breed from France as well as of animal flour used as food for cattle.

    Meanwhile, the Agriculture and Development ministers gave assurances that Greece was now the safest European market.

    [02] IOC delegation visits Greece

    A delegation of the International Olympics Committee arrived in Athens this morning to examine the course of the Olympic works.

    Yesterday, environment and public works minister Kostas Laliotis and the president of organizing OG committee "Athens 2004" Yanna Angelopoulou inspected by helicopter the projects underway for the 2004 Olympics in the Attica basin. Both officials expressed their satisfaction over the course of the projects.

    Meanwhile, prime minister Kostas Simitis yesterday met with culture minister Evangelos Venizelos in view of today's discussions with the IOC delegation.

    [03] Bill on labour relations

    The bill on labour relations will be tabled in Parliament today. The deputies of the ruling PASOK party are criticizing the bill, regarding the lay-offs and the flexible working hours.

    During yesterday's session of the party's parliamentary group responsible for labour it was asked to invite to the committee the president of the General confederation of Greek Workers in his capacity as member of the Pasok central committee to take part in the relative discussions, while the executive committee of Pasok will decide on the matter.

    Pasok deputy Theodoros Pangalos said the bill on labour was dividing the ruling party and society and should be examined taking into account all the different point of views.

    [04] Concern about ethnic Greeks and Albanian municipal elections

    In a written reply to a question raised by Pasok deputies on the cases of violence and fraud against the ethnic Greeks during the recent municipal elections in Albania, the Greek foreign minister George Papandreou said the Greek minority of Albania was a basic point of reference in Greek-Albanian relations.

    Meanwhile, the Albanian press yesterday referred to an invitation the president of the Socialist party Fatos Nano addressed to the Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis in his capacity as president of Pasok to visit Albania.

    According to the publications, Mr Nano is assessing in his letter that the spirit of cooperation the two parties share in the last few years must continue also in issues that concern the interests of Albania and Greece.

    [05] IMF's report on Greek economy

    The International Monetary Fund issued a draft report stating the significant progress made in the Greek economy in the last few years and mainly the significant drop of inflation and interest rates.

    The national economy ministry officially released the draft report yesterday and apart from the praises to the Greek economy, the report includes advice on the speeding up of infrastructure changes in the bid to reduce unemployment and achieve a more dynamic growth rate.

    [06] Greek-German business cooperation

    German investments in Greece and Greek-German cooperation between businesses in the Balkans and countries of the Black Sea were the object of talks the national economy minister Yannos Papantoniou had in Germany with political and economic officials.

    [07] Fuel market

    Fuel prices will increase as of midnight. Heating oil will go up by 10 drs, diesel by 7 drs and gas by 3 drs.

    Meanwhile, the development ministry is promoting changes in the way the market operates, while a legislative amendment will allow gas stations to get fuel supplies directly from refineries, while petrol companies will have the right to create private-owned petrol stations.

    [08] Athens bourse

    On the Athens stock exchange, the general share price index went up significantly by 2,07%, closing at 3.407,16 points.
