    [01] Developments in the Greek economy

    Inflation went up to 4% in October compared to 3.1% in September, following the sky high rises in the price of the dollar and petrol.

    Following this development, reduction in interest rates will be put off till next week. National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou and the Governor of the Bank of Greece Loukas Papadimos will meet today to discuss the issue.

    [02] Armed Forces General Chief of Staff - extension of his termin office for one more year

    The government Foreign Affairs and Defense Council yesterday decided to extend for one year the term in Office of the Armed Forces General Chief of Staff, Manousos Paragioudakis. The Council also approved Greece-Cyprus cooperation memorandum to deal with critical situations.

    Meanwhile, the Armed Forces General Chiefs of Staff of the Nato member states meet in Brussels today and tomorrow to discuss developments in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.

    [03] Briefing of the Cyprus National Council by President Kleridis

    Cyprus National Council chaired by President Glafkos Kliridis convened in Geneva yesterday.

    President Kliridis briefed the Council on the meeting he had with the UN Secretary General's special envoy Alvaro de Soto within the context of the 5th round of proximity talks on Cyprus.

    [04] The Parliament passed the draftbill on the National Radio and Television Council

    The Greek Parliament yesterday passed the draftbill regarding the National Radio and Television Council with 142 votes in favour and 123 against.

    The bill neither ensures transparency nor protects democracy, said the New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis, while Government Spokesman Dimitris Reppas replied that the ND party was lacking arguements.

    [05] Prime-minister Simitis will visit Rome

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis will pay a two day visit to Rome today in order to have talks with his Italian counterpart Juliano Amato. Mr.Amato will host a luncheon in Mr.Simitis honour tomorrow.

    Meanwhile, the ND party leader Kostas Karamanlis will visit Brussels today to attend the meeting of the European Popular Party presidium.

    [06] Pope John Paul's visit to Greece

    A Committee of the Holy Synod of the Greek Church will meet on November 23 and 24 to decide on Pope John Paul's visit to Greece.

    The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Holy Synod which also examined the issue of the Orthodox Church of Skopjie.

    [07] Eurodeputy of the GCP Yiannis Theonas resigned

    Greek Eurodeputy Yiannis Theonas resigned from all the organs of the Greek Communist party, accusing the leadership of leading the party to decay.

    [08] Onasis International awards

    Former French President Valery Giscar d'Estsain, Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis and professor John Doran, were awarded with the 1999 International Onasis prizes at a special ceremony held in Athens yesterday.

    Greek President Konstantinos Stefanopoulos handed the prizes to the winners.

    [09] Abstention of investors from the Athens Stock market

    Indifference and abstention of invewstors from the Athens stock market has given rise to deep concern. The general share price index yesterday went down by 1.53%, closing at 3,669.93 points, while the volume of transactions reached 45.2 billion drachmas.

    [10] Weather Forecast

    The National Metereological Service has forecast hot and humid weather for today while temperatures in Athens will range from 15 to 25 degrees centigrade and in Thessaloniki from 12 to 20 degrees centigrade
