[01] Fifth round of Cyprus proximity talks continues

The 5th round of proximity talks on the Cyprus issue continues in Geneva, while the two sides have focused their interest on the contacts United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan will have with both the Greek and the Turkish - Cypriots this coming week, within the framework of the talks.

According to Cypriot President Glafkos Kleridis, Mr. Annan is expected to make some general proposals towards a solution of the long-standing dispute. At the same time, President Kleridis clarified that he would not agree with an interim agreement but only with an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary General's special envoy, Alvaro de Soto said last night that some progress had been made, meaning that the talks were more detailed. In another development, there was a meeting yesterday of Greek and Turkish-Cypriots from the province of Pafos organised near the British bases in Dekelia, for the first time after the Turkish invasion.

Those present expressed their satisfaction at the opportunity to meet once again with their fellow villagers and stressed that they would work towards a re-united country.

Delivering a speech at the sixth conference of the Nationalist Action party, which was held in Ankara, Devlet Bachtseli said that the European Union shuld stop relating Turkey's candidancy with Greek-Turkish relations and adopt a more objective stance on the Cyprus and Aegean issues.

Hijacker Christos Kediras committed suicide yesterday morning by throwing himself through a 7th floor window at the central police headquarters in Athens, after taking a busload of Japanese tourists hostage last Saturday.

The Japanese ambassador to Athens thanked the Greek authorities for the way they handled the hijacking case and stressed that the level of security in Greece is high.

In the meantime, the 33 Japanese tourists continue their holidays in Greece and have already planned a visit to Meteora.

[03] Divers continue their search in ''Express Samina''

Personal items belonging to the victims and survivors of the "Express Samina" shipwreck were salvaged by divers yesterday and handed over to the authorities.

The divers concentrated their search around the ferryboat's garage, where their movements had been restricted, due to poor visibility.

In the meantime, a special appeals court prosecutor yesterday ruled out the possibility that the ship's radar equipment had been deliberately tampered with.
