[01] Fifth round of Cyprus proximity talks continues

According to Cypriot President Glafkos Kleridis, Mr. Annan is expected to make some general proposals towards a solution of the long-standing dispute. At the same time, President Kleridis clarified that he would not agree with an interim agreement but only with an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary General's special envoy, Alvaro de Soto said last night that some progress had been made, meaning that the talks were more detailed. All Greek citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations, enjoy they same rights and have the same obligations, the Foreign ministry spokesman Papayiotis Beglitis said yesterday replying to the Turkish Foreign ministry's claims for alleged violations of the Muslim minority's rights in Thrace.

On the contrary, Mr. Beglitis added, there is indisputable evidence against Turkey and the policy it follows towards the Greeks of Constantinople, Imvros and Tenedos.

In another development, there was a meeting yesterday of Greek and Turkish-Cypriots from the province of Pafos organised near the British bases in Dekelia, for the first time after the Turkish invasion.

Those present expressed their satisfaction at the opportunity to meet once again with their fellow villagers and stressed that they would work towards a re-united country.

Delivering a speech at the sixth conference of the Nationalist Action party, which was held in Ankara, Devlet Bachtseli said that the European Union shuld stop relating Turkey's candidancy with Greek-Turkish relations and adopt a more objective stance on the Cyprus and Aegean issues.
