    [01] The 2001 state budget will be tabled in the parliament on Wednesday .

    The 2001 state budget, which will be ratified by the cabinet today and will be tabled in the Parliament on Wednesday, provides for the first time in Greece's fiscal history, a surplus amounting to 200 billion drachmas , as well as a significant drop of the public debt. The new state also provides for 2,2% rise in salaries in the public sector and 2,5% to 3,5% rise in salaries in the private sector .

    Additionally, the government committee is expected to decide on the amount of the heating allowance to be given to low income earners.

    [02] Changes in labour relations .

    Labour Minister Tasos Yiannitsis will today meet with the Presidium of the General Confederationof Greek Workers and Employees Unions to discuss changes in labour relations . A difference of views on the weekly working hours was noted during the meeting between representatives of the GCGW and representatives of medium class businessmen

    [03] Cypriot President Glafkos Kleridis met with the American ambassador to Nicosia on Monday .

    Cyprus President Glafkos Kliridis met with the American ambassador to Nicosia Donald Buttler on Monday in view of his departure for Geneva to attend the fifth round ofproximity talks .

    Following the meeting, Mr. Butler stated that the proximity talks should proceed as fast as possible. Asked to comment on the American Presidential envoy Alfred Moses' statement regarding a solution of the Cyprus issue before the end of the year, he said that he shared Mr. Moses' optimism, adding however that he did not know when the Cyprus issue would be solved .

    [04] Revision of the Constitution .

    Terms of financing political parties and candidates was the subject of yesterday's broad goverment meeting under the chairmanship of Prime-minister Kostas Simitis, with the participation of the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis, Justice Minister Michalis Stathopoulos, Interior Minister Vaso Papandreou , Mr. Miltiades Papaioanou and Pasok speaker Evangelos Venizelos.

    Following the meeting , Mr. Venizelos said , the aim of the goverment and the ruling Pasok party, was to get the broadest possible consensus while he made clear that there was no question of changes in the electoral law .

    As regards, the issue of corruption he admitted that it existed, underlining however, that we should differentiate between penal and politically punishable conduct.

    [05] The President of the ND party Kostas karamanlis met with the Speaker of the House ,Apostolos Kaklamanis .

    New Democracy party President Costas Karamanlis met with the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis yesterday to make his proposals regarding the operation of the National Radio-Television Council in view of the debate in the Parliament of the relevant draftbill .

    After the meeting, Mr. Karamanlis referred to the importance of the issue adding that it was linked with the quality of Democracy and transparency.

    [06] Athens 2004 Olympic Games .

    The speeding up of Olympic works in view of the International Olympic Committee visit to Athens was decided during Monday's meeting between Culture Minister Theodoros Pangalos and Environment and Town Planning Minister Kostas Laliotis with the President of the Athens 2004 Organising Committee Yanna Aggelopoulou Daskalaki. The signing of a memo on the Cultural Olympiad is also expected to be signed within the next few days.

    In the meantime ,the Personnal Data Protection Department has decided that the salaries of the personnel working in the "Athens 2004" organization could be made public,but only under certain conditions and throught parliamentary control.

    [07] 10% rise in sea fares .

    The Sea Transport Advisory Committee last night proposed a 10% rise in sea fares and also approved new liscences for ships travelling to and from the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands. It has also decided to recall the liscence of passenger ship "Express Naias", for not meeting the EU fire security requirements.

    In the meantime, important findings, including the ship's log -salvaged by divers on Saturday from the "Express Samina", shiprwrecked earlier this month off Paros island, are expected to shed light on the cause of the tragedy in which at least 80 people lost their lives. The divers will continue their work in an effort to enter the engine room and the ship's garage, to check for any trapped victims.

    [08] Athens stock exchange .

    On the Athens stock exchange the General Share Price Index remained unchanged yesterday closing at 3.762,46 points.
