  • [01] Yiougoslavia. Hopes for a better future under the leadership of Voislav Kostunica.

    A festive atmopsphere prevails in Belgrade today , following yesterday's explosive situation against Slobodan Milosevic - where demonstrators stormed the parliament and the serbian state television building- and the undertaking of power by the opposition leader Voislav Kostunica.

    Speaking on Serbian television, opposition leader Kostunica said that his aim was the restoration of democracy stressing that nobody would take revenge for what had happened in the past .

    Kostunica also stated that what was more important at this point was Yugoslavia's to re-join the international community, improve its relations with the West and take iyts place in Europe. He also referred to improvement of relations within the Federal Republic of Yiougoslavia specially referring to improvement of relations between Serbia - Montenegro .

    On his part the president of Montenegro Milo Tzouganovits expressed hope that the new leadreship opened the way for the improvement of Serbia-Montenegro relations. According to information, Slobodan Milosevic is currently in the village Belianitsa, about 40 kms west of Bor near the borders of Yugoslavia, Rumania and Bulgaria.

    Zoran Tzintziz,a senior member of the opposition had earlier warnedthat Milosevic could organise a coup .

    Prime minister Costas simitis said that the greek governemnt is in a state of readiness monitoring developments in Yiougoslavia and will take all necessary measures to transfer safely to Greece all Greek students in Yugoslavia.

    Mr Simtis also said that Greece will continue working for Yugoslavia's european course ,adding that Yiougoslav political forces should indicate calmness and responsibility and respect the willingness of the Yiougoslav people .

    In the meantime according to the announcement issued by the head of French diplomacy Imber Ventrin, the Eurpean Union appears ready to respond to the opposition leader Kostunica appeal for the lifting of sanctions against Yiougoslavia and keep its promises .

    On its part the US supported the demonstrators and announced that it would lift sanctions against Yiougoslavia as soon as possible .

    French president Zaques Shirac also expressed his support to Kostunica while Russian president Vladimir Putin said he was in favour of a united Yiougoslavia.

    [02] New measures for the shipping industry

    The Grek parliament decided on Thursday the lifting of the capotage ,deregulating sea transport by 2002 and gradually reducing ship's age limits to 30 by 2006. Goverment spokesman Dimitris Reppas ,announced the formation of a special committee within the Merchant Marine Ministry overseeing ships standards ,the hiring of 750 additional coast guard employees ,plus an additional 50 billion dracmas in equipment In cooperation with the Merchant Marine and Health Ministries ,initiatives will also be taken for the assistance of victims families from the Express Samina shipwreck.

    Merchant Marine minister Hristos Papoutsis presented the measures decided by the cabinet stressing that the draftbill will be tabled in November .

    In the meantime the plenum of the Europarliament called on the European Commission to re-examine exemptions regarding ships' age limits and capotage granted to European Union member states .

    [03] 2004 Olympic Games in Athens

    In a meeting yesterday between the Prime- minister Costas Simtis and the President of the Organizing Committtee of the 2004 Olympics, Yanna Angelopoulou, all issues regarding preparations in view of the Olympic Games 2004 were discussed

    [04] Military exercise '' Parmenion ''

    Greek President Kostis Stefanopoulos and Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos observed the final phase of the land and air military exercise Parmenion which took place in the region of Evros .The military exercise had begun on Friday including whole Greece but with emphasis in the regionsof Evros and the Aegean .

    [05] US defence secretary will visit Greece

    American Defence secretary William Cohen will pay his last visit to Greece on October 8,9 as the head of the American Pentagon in order to take part in the 5th annual interministerial meeting of South East European countries.

    During his stay in Greece Mr. Cohen will have bilateral talks with his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem.

    [06] Russian Foreign minister will visit Cyprus

    Russian Foreign minister , Igor Ivanof has shceduled to visit Cyprus from October 9-111.

    During his stay on the island Mr Ivanof is expected to meet with Cypriot president Kliridis and have oficial talks with his Cypriot counterpart Ioanni Kassoulidis.

    [07] Fuel

    In a letter to Development Minister ,Nikos Hristodoulakis , the Federation of Greek Petrol Stations expressed its concern , that the lowered fuel consumption prices announced may not be effective for another week.

    In the letter ,it states that production and retail companies are still selling fuel at the former steep prices ,while petrol stations have 10 day supplies at these higher prices.

    According to reports ,gas stations refuel every Tuesday and are now stocked up until the following week with fuel purchased at the higher price, conficting with the lowered prices in effect since Wednesday evening .
